It’s been a while...

Post by superdan » Thu Dec 28, 2017 12:06 am

I have missed the forums but the last few years have been super crazy and have flown by so fast! I have been lurking on the Facebook page, which never felt right, the forum feels more like home to me. Although, I have been randomly posting on the Facebook page just because I miss Neons and all the 2gn people. Now that it’s updated to work on tapatalk I hope that a lot of the guys and girls active on the Facebook page will come back to the forum.

I am going to slowly get back into the forum some more and get my neon back on the rode. I think about her everyday lol

I too haven't been on much but when Jason posted on FB that the forum was down I didn't expect to feel like something was suddenly missing. Glad it is back up!

Yeah fb is nice but it definitely has a different feel so I post less there than I did here.

Same here. It’s taking some getting used to it but overall it seems like a nice app.

Good time to save off the pictures and host them somewhere else.

I posted this earlier, but since 2015 rolled back around, I guess this little tid bit got nixed.

It works for most, but not all PB pics. Better than nothing I guess.

Hello everyone,

Over the last couple of days I've been implementing a workaround for the recent Photobucket issues.

At the start of this project, the forum has 142,358 unique picture URLs in live posts.
Of those, 96,472 are located at Photobucket.

Damn, right?

As we've all seen, Photobucket now blocks third-party viewing without paying an extortionate rate.
You're able to work around it with an extension, but I'm sure that will be blocked/worked around soon enough.

So, I got out the soldering iron, some wire, a huge butterfly net and scrapped the motor out of a Dodge Colt with 5 PSI of boost. After connecting this mashup to the Internet, I was able to retrieve and store 80,612 of those Photobucket images. The rest have been removed by their owners or for whatever reason are no longer available. That's still an 83.5% retention rate, so I'm more than satisfied.

The photos are now directly hosted here on the forums, and the forum has been scripted with a new extension that checks the local file store to see if the picture exists - before handing it to your browser to go find. If a local copy does exist, then it will alter the URL and serve it to you from the forum. So you'll see a picture with a "forums.neons.org" address, but your post will still read "photobucket.com".

What does this mean? Well, any existing Photobucket image that was put into a post before October 1-ish will now live on forever here on the org directly. So if you had a Photobucket image in a post, it will always be available unless you change/delete the post.

Any new links to Photobucket - well, if you make one, you're on your own. I'm not sure why you would.

This is not supposed to impact any other photos. If it does, please paste a link to the thread in this one so I can investigate.

Cheers,
Da Dragon

Edit: MS Edge doesn't seem to like this site, or vice versa, it keeps locking up/freezing when using Edge. But then so far I am not impressed with Edge overall. Faster my ass. I have better luck with Chrome.

It's an app you can use on your phone to access forums without having to go through Safari or Chrome?

I'm sorry for those who use "Chrome". I've heard to many bad issues using it. And Safari, I have a desktop shortcut so it's not a problem. I personally have not seen the use for TapATalk on any of my devices. Granted that's my personal opinion :)
Good to see the forum is back up though!

Never had an issue with Chrome. Firefox is slow as balls, as is IE, and Edge.

Now that I think about it, I actually haven't tried this with Edge yet. Just since the upgrade, I've used this on many combinations of Windows 32-bit and 64-bit, Linux 32-bit and 64-bit, and multiple version of Android. Browsers include Opera, Chromium, Chrome, Slimjet, Firefox, and IE. I still haven't had any issues.

I was using Edge when the site first came back up, and it kept freezing up. I didn't have the issue with Chrome.

Edge was also slower on other things too, not just 2gn. Both Fire fox and Edge claim to be much faster than Chrome, but in my experience, that proves to be a grossly overstated false claim.

Just note: You need Win 10 to use Edge. Since it's on my recent laptop purchase, I have access to it. Overall, I would prefer 8.1, but it is what it is.

I have found there are still sites out there that will not let you download stuff unless you are running Win 7 as the newest platform, and have to use IE.

8.1 and 10 are too new for them I guess.
