I realize that you said not the valve noise, but I really believe that is the issue here... hard to tell without hearing it in person. I've found that you can always find exactly where a noise is originating by using a small section of pipe and placing it to your ear. move the pipe around (top to bottom) to see if it's coming more from the top of the engine or not... but honestly, I just think it's time for some valve work (or replacement)... Mine was wicked loud before I finally got around to fixing it...

That knocking is piston slap...very audible when the car is warming up and gets better when hot.
We have the exact same noise on my wife's SX 2.0. It has over 200,000 kms and has sounded like that since I bought the car 4 years ago.
How is your oil consumption?
