Shifter Troubles

Post by MoparOso » Sun Apr 20, 2014 3:50 pm

I have a 2005 SXT I picked up as a year-round beater/winter driver. The car had a transmission on it's last legs when I got it, and I literally had to brute force gears towards the end before it quit and my replacement gearbox went in. I picked up a NV T350 out of a 2006 PT which is my favorite gear ratio config. Nice close ratio first - fourth with a tall fifth for cruising fuel efficiently.

Anyway, Booger bushings are installed and the shifter is nice and snug, fourth gear is not right. If you don't pay attention and just drive and pull the lever back normally, it will feel like it's engaged, but when you step on the gas it will pop back out. I'm concerned because this was what the transmission that came out of the car was doing although much more violently.

If I make sure it shifts, it's fine and stays in gear which is leading me to wonder if it's the cable. I had to abuse the old cable so badly just to get the damn thing to drive, I'm wondering if I stretched or wore something out. Is there any adjustment to this setup or is it just a new cable and the day is done?

Cheers

If you take the center console out, IIRC, you will see there is an adjustment on the driverside cable end. You should also do a crossover adjustment too.
