01 Neon 2.4 swap... Legality?

Post by Vod_Kanakas » Wed Jan 28, 2015 12:48 am

The 01 Neon didn't come with an option for the 2.4L DOHC. So is this a legal swap just with the motor or is there other components that need to be changed over?

And as far as the pcm. Doesn't it have the vin in it that the DAD and BAR97 read?

Technically, the only EPA legal swap would be the SRT swap using all the donor vehicle wiring and engine/emissions management.

Since the 2.4T (EDV) was used in the vehicle platform, it would be legal.

But you can make a 2.4N/A (EDZ) pass emissions with the 2.0 PCM. So if you keep it low key, you can get by. Especially since most testing stations only check the OBD port for issues, and don't do an exhaust pipe test.

You could ask on neons.org, I'm sure there are (more active) Cali members there that have 2.4 swaps. There are numerous states here on the east coast that also use California Emissions.

But IDK if they are enforced as strictly. I'm pretty sure New York is one of them. My '99 was originally sold in NY, and it is (was) a California spec car. It actually still has the Cali stuff intact.

With what little I know of CA emissions, I probably wouldn’t even try. I’m sure there are ways around it though. And I bet they do a tail pipe sniff.

Not saying that a properly maintained 2.4 would blow that much dirtier than a 2.0.

The full SRT swap would still be technically legal, since it is a newer model year, and still a neon platform.

They got the Monster Miata to be Cali legal, but I'm sure there was a lot more resources there than your average neon owner has access to.

Q: What about emissions?

A: The Ford V8 Miata’s that have passed California’s strict but

straightforward engine change requirements consist of: Stock 5.0 EFI

engine with all the original (Ford) factory emission equipment intact &

operating and the engine being the same year or newer than the

project car. We're currently building a 2003 LS2 Miata with all the

emmision equipment that came on the GTO. Stay tuned as this will

be the first LS Miata we have built for CA.

Definitely not saying it’s impossible, just not worth it. Just too much headache to deal with.

IIRC, wasnt it so long as the motor is a newer or same year than the one being removed it is considered legal? so long as you pass smog(if you have it)
