2001/2003 neon race car builds

Post by Turbo2300 » Tue Feb 19, 2013 1:08 am

Hey guys new member here. I have been working on this car a while now, and figured I would share what I have done thus far.

The story goes as such; my girlfriends dad has two circle track cars and after spending a good amount of time in the pits with them I thought about buying or building my own car. Well the local track announced last fall that they will have a new class for '13 called the hobby stock division. The lowest class before was Pro-4 and that was pretty much hopped up pintos and 2.3 mustangs. But like normal money took over and it grew away from a stock class. This hobby stock class is 100% stock with the exception of safety stuff (seat, cage, fuel cell, harness etc) and to keep the playing field level they mandate a Hoosier track tire. Other than that, stock suspension, stock trans, engine (with the exception of a cold air intake).

Long story short, her dad gave me a 2001 neon that he had as a parts car for her neon daily driver that she has since sold. It took a decent hit in the front end which is why the body parts don't match color wise.

The suspension is comprised of stock neon/pt cruiser parts. It has srt4 shocks/struts on the right side, and stock SE struts with the srt4 springs on the left. It has a pt cruiser sway bar up front and soon to have an srt4 sway bar in the rear, and I'm going to make left side sway bar end links out of all thread to make it adjustable. Other than that it's just a stock stripped and caged neon.

Ill just post the pics in the best order I can, maybe some minor explanations.

Quite a cage there! Should be fun.

Did the car start as an SE?

I love seeing Neons being built for all kinds of different racing. Keep up the good work and keep us posted
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

Looks great man! If you want you could probably do small things and get away with it, like magnum parts. A magnum exhaust manifold under a stock heatshield will look like a stock part bolted up. A magnum cam will go in place without doing any modifications to the head, and wont have any sound difference. In fact, you could probably get away with a magnum head unless someone knows to look for the R/T embossing. A magnum intake will look drastically different, but is a stock part off an R/T.

What about a dohc bottem end with the stock sohc head. He still has the sbec style ecu so he could run a 95-99 dohc bottemend. Bump that compression and use the cam and exhaust that Jerry said. Shiaaaaaatttt that pt loser got nothing on you now......

Yes it was an SE. im pretty happy with the cage, I'm so glad my dad has been helping me or id lose it and start hacking it up haha. Manual pipe benders SUCK, buy pre bent!!!!

I'm interested in hiding some mods as id like some more power, but it's freakin hard to google mods you can hide for a neon, everyone is like "just throw a xxxxx cam in it" and I YouTube it and its freakin obvious as hell. I wanted to raise compression on it and get a little more but didnt know if the few hp was worth it.

What did the magnum parts come in, and can I hide it? What bottom end and top end all interchanges? If I have to grind a rt emblem off the head that's fine haha.

car is lookin good!

I also recommend the mag swap with a dohc bottom end, def yield the most gains while still staying within the rules.

probably be just easier to buy the magnum top end from someone on here, a lot of times the yards are picked clean because ppl know what it is.

a dohc bottom end can be had easily from a jy, there are tons of those around

Are those 13's? And what's the back spacing you're using? Also, are they from Basset? And can you show the driver side wheels on and how far they poke out?

For some reason when you take pics of it, they look like they stick out just as far but it's like 3" of different backspace haha. Ill try and get you pics when I go to work on it in an hour or so

Little update for you guys. Got the wiring figured out and fuel lines ran last Sunday, even fired it up for the first time, so now I know it runs haha.

Got my tires this morning, mounted them, and threw them on 15 minutes before I left for work, so I didn't get many pics for you guys yet. Here's two I got quick. Oh, and it moves under it's own power now!!

cool man.. ive seen your car on fb from mr. happel commenting on the pictures. the magnum motor stuff comes in harrys alot but you gotta beat me to getting the stuff lol. i tend to grab that stuff alot..

if you need i have some srt struts and springs sitting here along with a full srt exhaust and magnum exhaust manifold.

when they mean stock class does the car have to come with it or can it be stock parts from the same make. like i.e the mangum 2.0 motors(stock in r/t and acr), pt brakes, swap to a 5spd(which has gearing choices of 3.55 and 3.94) etc . all stock parts in stock cars but not what it came with. im sure it has to stay stock engine size it came with like 2.0 for neon, 2.4 for the pt cruisers so you cant go swapping that but then again if you could i would. or find ways to BEND the rules

The rules say stock means stock- but where do you draw the line?

Id like to play with the rt stuff and see if it helps, it already has srt struts and springs. I gotta watch what I say on Facebook before I get myself in hot water haha

ill keep that in mind on the comments.. lol also why i didnt say which forum it was

yeah as for stock where do you draw the line, because the rt mag stuff is stock on rt's so why cant you make it "stock" in your car.

checkout what guys on neons.org do for the stock class racing.. alot find ways to bend the rules and such.

If the rt intake didnt differ so much I wouldn't mind changing it when I find one. The track owner told me this morning "we will try to keep tabs on who changes what throughout the year"

How different is that rt exhaust manifold from mine? Is it worth trying on my original head? I have the exhaust off of it at the moment and I need to make a new pipe for it anyway lol

the intake manifold is way different then a normal sohc intake manifold.. the exhaust manifold is a tube syle manifold made by borla for chrysler along with the exhaust which is 2.25 vs the stock 2." you have now.. same with srt exhaust its 2.25? but with the factory heat sheilds you would never know. the one i have i think is missing the top heat sheild.

How many miles are on the motor, before you go ripping on it round the track id suggest doing a water pump, t belt and tensioner so it doesnt break and wipe out the motor. 130ish from rockauto for the kit.

i have pictures of the mag heads too and such. none at this time other then the mag header, srt exhaust and r/t muffler that you could use. all 2.4 dohc or srt stuff at my shop right now

if you put the factory heat shield on the top noone would ever see it. would look like factory.

same header. which i may have around too..gotta check the shop tomorrow for you. once the heat shield is bolted down you barely see the tubes showing. in this picture the heat shield is un bolted so i could remove the manifold from the car
