How to: install ByVampDesign Trunk LED's

Post by iThane » Sat Jul 30, 2011 1:54 am

This is for installing the LED strips bought from the ByVampDesign
website. You can find the same LED strip here: Link

This took me roughly 5 minutes.

- First things first, I recommend disconnecting your battery cable to keep
the trunk light from illuminating. The stock bulb gets real hot and hard
to handle.

- Pull the plastic cap off the stock trunk light by pulling down
and pushing in the clip that holds the cap in place. I just used the key
to my car to pull down and push in the clip. The plastic cap pulls down
and is connected to the bulb, so just pull the bulb out and plug in the
new LED strip. Its simple plug-and-play style!

- Next, clip the plastic back in place. The wire will be pinched
between the plastic and trunk roof, but it should cause no damage.
Mine still works just fine.

- After that, clean the surface you wish to apply the strip to.
ByVampDesign provides a nice 3MM strip of double sided sticky tape
all the way down the LED strip, so all you need to do is peel and stick!

- It might be a little hard to see where exactly i mounted it in the
picture, but i used a curved, slanted ledge since the trunk top lines
are curved, and the strip is straight. i just lightly adhered a few
points so i could go back and adjust anywhere if necessary, and
when i was finally satisfied with the positioning, i just ran my finger
down the strip to adhere the rest.

Reconnect the battery cable, and that's all!

Even being the color red, it's a lot brighter than my stock halogen bulb.

This picture is obviously a lot LOT brighter than in person, but the
camera makes it a lot lighter, and my phone makes it too dark...

Needless to say, I'm satisfied!

Interesting that yours had 3M tape on it. Mine had some oddball brand that doesn't hold for crap. While it was tacky to the touch, it will not stay in place at all. After a couple hours most of it is hanging in my trunk.

Other than that it's great
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

If you dont clean the trunk surface, it wont stick. Just an FYI i've never made one w/o the 3m. (Except a prototype for a mustang).

But im glad you liked it.

I did clean the sheet metal first. I used plastic prep, then glass cleaner, and for good measure I used alcohol before mounting it. If it isn't clean it never will be

Does the backing paper say 3M on it? Because mine didn't.

did you make sure the surface was completely dry first too? maybe you
should just replace your tape with 3mm tape. and yes the paper had
3mm written all over it.

i just checked and the light still has a hulk-like grip on my trunk. good
thing i like it, because its gonna be a pain to remove!

My backing paper was white with a name (I can't recall what it was) in blue written in cursive at an angle all the way down it.

And yes, the metal was completley dry.

I forgot to follow up with this, sorry.

I used some 3M tape we have here at the shop and it is holding great. I love the light it provides. So much better than the stock bulb :)

Sold the car a month ago but before it was gone the lights were still
holding up just fine! I might want a string for the blue car now :)
