How to Clear OBD codes?

Post by Shiftlock » Thu Aug 30, 2012 10:12 am

This may be a stupid question, but is there a way to clear the OBD codes on my 2000 Neon?

Unplug the battery for about 5 minutes.

Or

1) Above + Reach around, and turn on/off the headlight switch and reconnect the battery. That goes much faster.

2) Buy a code scanner. Most will erase the codes. If you do a lot of "playing" the battery thing gets old fast.

^^ second that.

Also, What was the check engine on for? If you have no idea, then take it to advance auto or autozone and they will scan it for free. We can help you fix it if you have not done so already. If it is not fixed, then it will come back on and if you are in an emissions area.... then you will fail automatically. lol

I just spent 328409238423094823 hours (more like twenty min) filtering through BS to figure out how to reset my engine codes and now that I have done so I find this thread... : (

I think when people want to wipe their codes it's generally after they have fixed the issue.

OBD2 removes the light when you fix the issue, there is a cycle time that reevaluates the data from the sensors and if the data is back within parameters, it removes the light. Or is supposed to.
Drive it like you stole it, and work on it like you married it.

Depends on the fault. Some take 50ish starts to clear. Some clear just driving down the road, shortly after they come on.

If you say for example, unplug the TPS, or the IAC, it will not clear after you plug it back in. It is ~50 starts, or disconnect the battery, if you do not have a scan tool.

I personally do not like looking at the CEL that long.
