Charms Project Log

Post by CharmfulPeace » Sat Jan 06, 2018 6:38 am

Hey all!

First of all, let's start with the pictures I took of Peyton a couple days after I got her this past summer for $800 CAD.

She is a 2002 Chrysler Neon LE
Image

Since getting her, the work that I have done/have gotten done is as follows
  • Replaced Air Filter with New one
  • Put in a new battery
  • Fixed a wiring issue with the trunk release (Which ended up being right behind the trunk matt along the left wall
  • Gotten her first oil change in my posession
  • Replaced OEM stereo with an aftermarket
  • Replaced front passenger Wheel Bearing
  • Gotten two pre-owned tired fitted on (They're 65's compared to 60's, so they were put on the back)
To Do:
  • Fix Rear-End
  • Rotor service/replacement
  • Custom plate (LE Neon)
  • Fix Evap Emission System (Currently have to keep her under half tank, else she will stutter and stall out)
  • Replace Spark Plugs and Cables
  • Repair Transmission Oil Pan Seal
  • Get Brand New tires and rims
  • Replace Head/Tail lights with Spyders (Or similar)
  • Replace Front Grill
  • Install a Short Ram Intake
  • Replace Steering Wheel with a PT Cruiser Steering Wheel
  • Fix Rust spots and possible Paint Job? (After either of which, She'll become a Sunny Day car)
  • Get custom plate (LE NEON)
(To be updated)

NICE. I like that unit a lot. I converted one to blue illumination for another 2gn member years ago.

Keep up the updates!

It was a super nice feature back in the day before smart phones were popular or had fast enough data to support OTA maps. When someone figured out how to disable the movement lock, that was even better!

So yesterday I finally looked into the wiring for the RB1 and, to my surprise, I already has the proper wiring so I shoved it in with great eagerness to get it going! Very pleased with it! ^•^

OOooO that looks nice in there! i really wanted to get one of those when my aftermarket radio died... hard to justify the same price of a really nice aftermarket one..

does yours do the Chrysler logo on startup?

It does show the Chrysler logo since I put it in my Chrysler, if I understand things correctly these head units show the logo of whichever vehicle they're in. (As the seller had it showing Dodge, and it shows Chrysler for me, to my pleasant surprise!)

And yeah, I had a decent little Chinese aftermarket with Bluetooth and such in Peyton since my Kenwood radio took a big one, and I wanted to get an RB4. But, when I saw this one on Facebook I jumped on it lol.

Now to figure out how to set the clock

This is correct - Sometimes it takes a bit for the logo to change, but eventually, it does.

Just updated the picture links (Had to completely wipe my website and start from fresh recently, so pictures are same as they were.)

Honestly, I have kind of been neglecting my Peyton, but I'm going to get back into fixing her up. First thing on my agenda right now is to purchase a pair of new rear wheel bearing/hub assemblies and replace both (Only need one, but I more so believe that it is better to replace a complete set instead of a partial.)

Also honestly, I was thinking of selling my Neon after I got my 2004 Oldsmobile Alero fixed up, but now I am thinking of keeping with my Neon since it only has wheel and transmission issues which should be easy fixes compared to my Alero, which needs an Engine swap lol.

Besides, Chrysler > GM > Ford

Meh, there is no rhyme or reason to wheel bearing failures. I have only replaced the passenger rear on my '01 at 172,000, and the other three have 210,000 and are all quiet.

Having a spare doesn't hurt though, and you may need it to replace the replacement, before the other original fails. :P

This is true, which is why I'm going to look at ordering one for the rear and front off of RockAuto sometime in the next couple of months.
But, I do want to replace them both because my Neon has 350,000+Km on her and I don't know what work or maintenance has all been done by the prior owners.

So, went to replace my rear passenger wheel bearing but had to put everything back together before taking the old off since I realized that I don't have a big enough socket to take off the nut holding it in.
But, I did notice that there seems to be a little couple of things missing... #-o

From the looks of that backing plate, there hasn't been any brake shoes in there for ages.

What concerns me more, is where/how/if they blocked the rear brake line(s) at. Because without shoes, the wheel cylinder would have pushed a piston out the end, and the brakes would be really terrible. Worse than without the rear brakes, like a busted brake line bad.

If the piston is out of the wheel cylinder, you are going to need a new one or both of those too. I would pull the backing plates and clean them up as best as you can, or replace them with nicer ones. It's not fun when a backing plate rots through. They tend to deflect a lot under braking loads when they rust thin... (This happened on the Sundance, wasn't fun)

Wow. Now there's something you don't see everyday. It's crazy to think someone deleted the rear brakes .

Should have just left the drums off, to save weight....

Probably will need new ones, I'm betting the surface is rusted to hell. Not many places turn them anymore.

Or just search for a rear disc set up and bolt it on....

Is that a rust hole in the rear crossmember, or some other bracket?

I looked at that picture thinking it was a joke. Holy crap. I didn't go back through the project log, but did you drive this car home or trailer it?

Luckily parts are still cheap and plentiful. It shouldn't be too bad to get back up and running.

At least it's the passenger rear and not one of the others. For me, when I'm slowing down turning into an exit ramp, typically that wheel isn't touching the ground anyway.

lol, I drove it home and have been driving it every day... Only realized it until I took it apart yesterday.

I don't know, going to replace the bearing/hub assembly next week when I borrow the proper size socket from my cousin and then go from there.. Might keep an eye out for another Neon, but I might also look at fixing up my Alero instead (Other cousin has a friend with a couple of 3400 SFI Car's to use for an engine swap.

Well, I do live in an area with a bunch of... "rez" native americans, so it's not so much of a surprise here. Though, I think that leaving the drums off wouldn't have been too far of a thought for them

Wow poor car. Very nice you are turning it into a better condition ride. I am not sure I would want to invest that much into it seeing all that rust everywhere. I would check your front brakes to see how much they are wearing since you have no rear brakes at all

Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking..
And, I mean... For now, it's holding and doing nicely. So, I think I might look at selling it later on yet and see about looking for another Neon (Gotta get my Alero up and going before then, though :P )
