Stationary Rear Windows

Post by UriahRR » Thu Dec 01, 2011 9:13 pm

Ok, just because plex-glass gets scratchy, foggy, yellow, and kills you with a million knives in an accident, plus is not street legal, I will be leaving in my back windows, but don't care for the up and down sliding motion any more. It's an unnecessary feature.

Was just wondering if anyone knew how to keep the glass window in but make it stationary. I will probably try to weld in a stud or find a bolt long enough to hold the window up so I can remove the whole BS roller assembly, but wanted to check the 2gn DIY Wizards Book of Knowledge first. So help me out esse's.

Thanks.

Inn the old days, the drag racers would remove the crank assy's for weight redux, but the rules stated the window must be functional. The solution they came up with was to attach a seat belt to one side and loop it under the glass. then attach it to the other side, and use the slide adjustment to operate the glass. The same without the adjuster would work.

Hint:
Lexan (Polycarbonate) is shatter proof/doesn't discolor. If thick enough, it is even bullet proof. It is also more expensive than Plexiglass.

Military grade aircraft lexan is very scratch resistant. But IDK where you could obtain it. Unless you know someone that works at a place that does military jobs and can get some scrap. It is awesome stuff.

Instead of starting a new thread, I’m going to reply to this one I found when searching.

When I bought my car the rear passenger window crank would not work to roll the window up or down. As I was driving it the rear window would fall down into the door about an inch. I could pull it up, but it keeps falling. So I pulled off the door panel earlier to see if it might be an easy fix. In doing so I broke the crank. I can’t seem to figure out how to fix the rolling, so I looked for an easy way to block the window in the fully up position.

I had a feeling that the damage happened when somebody shot that door panel...

Here’s an idea I came up with. There are 2 bolts holding the glass to the channel. With the glass up there are 2 holes in the interior sheet metal that line up with those bolts. What if I run longer bolts out to those holes with some spacers to basically mount the glass to the interior sheet metal?

It’s ghetto as hell, but it works, so oh well!
