Help: Las Vegas Strip: 03 R/T trans swap vs 03 Cavalier

Post by bdmski » Tue Sep 30, 2008 2:04 am

This was my first time to the track after swapping to the R/T manual. I raced my buddies 03 cavalier. I pass him after the 1/4 mile no matter what, and cream him on races from a roll. But he's got a decent quarter mile because of his torque.

Until now I've never driven a manual in my life. I'm pretty good at driving it now. The only thing I really need to work on are my launches. I know I can do a lot better once I get my launches down. Enjoy! Comments/advice welcome

Elevation: ~2030 ASL

R/T: .785
60: 2.639
330: 7.237
1/8: 11.023
MPH: 64.08
1000: 14.256
1/4: 16.980
MPH: 82.96

I reved it to about 1700 rpm on this race and dumped it. Before this one I tried reving at 2500 but the tires spinned out for a long time. Chickening out, I shift before the red line only to bog out in 2nd.

Is it possible to get into the 15's with my mods and a better launch? What could my best possible time be?

I'm thinking to try again in the 2500 area and just spin until red line If I have to.

Please give me advice guys! I'm fairly new to this manual stuff and would love to achieve the best time time possible on my car. Hopefully you guys can give me some pointers.

who did the burnout before the race? Cause there's no point for you to do one. Doesn't sound like you're on slicks if you're spinning over 1700rpms.

Next time try a 4500rpm clutch drop, it should hook around 6k, which puts you towards the end of the powerband and let's you hit second a bit quicker, throwing you into the bottom of the powerband quickly, instead of bogging first gear.

I didn't burn out, and no slicks. Thanks for the advice. :)

I don't think a better 60' is gonna get you into the 15's. You said you're still mastering the manual, I'd say some practice shifting and a higher launch might get you low to mid 16's. And run it to redline or you're gonna bog every shift. The mods you have really only come into play at the top of the powerband.

At that elevation your are more than likely not going to get into the 15's without extensive mods.

I prefer the higher RPM drops for launching. I ran 16.11 at about 100' evelvation dropping at 5000 RPM. Also, you want the tires to spin. That gets the engine moving and puts you right up into the power band rather than it having to work from 2000ish RPM up to 4500+ RPM.

holy crap, I didn't even pay attention to elevation. Altho less than half a mile isn't too horrible.

If you want 15's, a 75shot nitrous kit will get you there.

What you should do is do a dohc head swap and some bolt ons and that will get you into the 14s then turbo the sucker to get into the 13,s

See I ran a 14.5 in my 2000 2nd gen with a dohc motor swap in her and some bolt ons , also no a/c or p/s . I run a MS unit that gives the stock sohc computer more timing and more fuel and you can even adjust the fuel maps so that it runs like if you had a afx computer. Now I am going serious and adding the 50 trim turbo to start.

Understandable, but what Dante is referring to is that you bumped a thread that is nearly a year and a half old. The original poster isn't really that active anymore.
