Post: #1 Posted: Wed Mar 10, 2010 1:15 pm Post subject: Kumho Ecsta XS tires + DCR lateral arms |
|
|
For anyone looking into a ridiculously sticky tire for your daily driver, look no further. These bad boys have an insane amount of grip, even when cold. While I haven't done temp readings on these yet and fine tuned them to my suspension, I'm already very impressed. Running ~45PSI, I can pull about 5 mph faster around a 180* freeway on-ramp compared to my old Yokohama V4-S. The XS' are pretty noisy, at almost all speeds. This is most likely due to the super aggressive tread pattern and compound design. Treadwear is rated at 180, which tells me these aren't going to last unless I take very good care of them. With proper inflation, zero toe, and a hair over 1 degree of negative camber all around, I hope to get a year out of them. Price paid was $470 shipped from Tire Rack. More info to come as I test these further!
The DCR lateral arms made a huge difference in mid-corner braking. The inherent brake-oversteer these cars suffer from is nearly gone. I can do 45mph in a sweeping banked corner and nail the brake, and it just slows down. No oversteer, no weight transition, nothing. Anyone who knows how bad this problem can be, especially with a full suspension setup, will love these arms. Cons include lack of maintainability (the spherical ends are non-greaseable and are fully exposed the weather). This leads to a short life-span, which doesn't work for everyone. Also, adjusting them can be tedious on the alignment rack. I also plan on getting more info up on these once I've tested them thoroughly.
As of now I have yet to get up the guts to push either of the above parts past their limit to see how they respond to corrections etc, so stay tuned! _________________ -Derek

Based on the design, they'll probably last anywhere from 10k-40k miles depending on how well they are maintained. I plan on cleaning and regreasing mine every couple of months, and possibly designing some kind of boot to keep road grime from bonding to the grease and getting into the ends. I'd say these are definitely not for the average joe. For the price, however, they're well worth the sacrifice IMO. Replacing the ends every two years and having it realigned isn't too big of a deal. _________________ -Derek

I wouldn't go that far. It kind of depends on the driver/owner. I personally maintain my car as if it were a weekend racecar, even though it's just my daily that sees the occasional canyon run. Most people drive their cars until they break, then fix them. I'm under my car every couple of weeks cleaning and checking things out. So these aren't going to be hard for me to maintain. If you're lazy and just want to bolt them on and go, these are definitely not for you. _________________ -Derek

The tires are kind of in the same boat as the arms. They're a very soft compound compared to what most people run on their DD's. They will probably last somewhere around half as long as a typical high performance summer tire. I hope to make mine last over a year (I average 12K miles/yr.) with regular front-to-back rotation and proper PSI. However, for the price, they're hard not to consider if pulling G's is your cup of tea. _________________ -Derek

My XS 205/50/15 lasted about 10,000 miles with agressive city driving and some autocrossing. The more they wear, the noisy they get, almost to the point you think a wheel bearing is going bad. But they do stick almost as good as my VictoRacers when autocrossing! Never been on a street tire that good in the dry. They are okay in the rain, good compared to other performance tires in the rain, but only fair compared to all season tires in the rain. If you want a sticky tire, you got to accept it won't get many miles. But this tire is relatively inexpensive and really grips. _________________ - - - - - - - -

^I hope to get 15K out of mine - almost all city driving (no autox planned).
These things are so fast in the corners it's ridiculous. Still very happy about getting them _________________ -Derek

why can't you just buy greasable boots for the rod ends? They sell them on summit. I'd assume you could find some to fit that application..

^I thought about that actually. I emailed Darrell Cox himself and asked about them, and he said grease isn't necessary. He said if they see dirty conditions to use wheel bearing grease, but other than that he didn't recommend it. Interesting.
He also said they he does sell replacement ends when the time comes, which is cool. _________________ -Derek

I'm glad to see you posting this. I have a set of DCR arms that I have yet to install. You review so far makes me more excited about putting them on
We'll see how they do paired to the SPTs I have. _________________ -Holmes

10mph turn at 50? I'm gonna have to call BS. Now a 25mph turn, like those looked like in the video, without breaking a sweat.
I'm more interested in consistency, like a banked long sweeping hairpin. 90 degree turns suck. _________________ -Derek

haha
Sooo, I rotated these bad boys today for the first time. Aside from the usual outer edge wear this car seems to inflict, they're breaking in perfectly. Since they aren't directional (they only designate "inner" and "outer") I can rotate in an x pattern, which is insane seeing as how these are almost race tire compound. Should get 1000's of extra miles out of them because of it.
Also brought them down to 40psi front, 42psi rear. Was at 45/45 for the first few weeks. Time to find their sweet spot. _________________ -Derek

I can not wait to do this again, it was fun being strapped into my seat with no movement.... _________________

They've only gotten stickier, honestly. I finally had a chance to rip some real corners the other day. I was out at the coast and we took my car (yeah it was a very rough 300+ miles). Obviously tires are only a fraction of my formula for grip, but they certainly play an important role. The banked hairpin type corners were almost scary. You know that feeling in your stomach you get on a rollercoaster from the G's? Felt pretty much like that.
Aside from the lack of life, these tires are ridiculous. Love them more and more as they wear down. _________________ -Derek

DCR lateral arms, aka DCR rear control arms? I thought it made adjusting toe soooo much easier. I say this because I know of a local with the DIY rear control arms which are setup somewhat like the DCR's and when I went to the same alignment shop the tech *sighed* and wish I had the ones the other dude had. He said they were so much easier to adjust.

Also interested in the DCR's since I took a turn too hard yesterday, felt the understeer, got on the brakes, and the car violently shifted it's weight and oversteered and pretty much fish tailed down the road as I tried to regain control. So, along with driving a bit slower, I'm looking into some of these.
Next autocross is the end of October... I can't wait that long... I'm feeling the itch like 10 dollar hooker... _________________

Heh technically they aren't control arms, since they only have one mounting point on each end. "Lateral arm" is Dodge's technical term for them too.
The DCR's are very tedious to work with, as adjusting toe affects camber and vice versa. This is also the case with the stock eccentric adjusters, but much less pronounced, since their range of adjustment is minimal. The change in geometry caused by adjusting both front and rear arms can cause the alignment to be more touchy.
Still not a single problem with my arms, aside from them being pretty noisy. I wiped the ends off a couple months ago and I check them for play every time I have wheels off. _________________ -Derek
