I've noticed them before, but never really knew what they were. And the reason I'm asking is because my rear passenger tire doesn't have one, but the other 3 do. _________________ *앤드류* (^_^)v

And the wrong kind at that. They should be using coated weight or that will corrode the wheel finish. _________________ 2gn Member Feedback

and dont worry if one wheel doesnt have one, it just means it is perfectly balanced. On the other hand if you knew it was on there before and now it doesnt, that means it fell off and it will need to be rebalanced. _________________

some shops dont care what type they use.
Next time whether it be a nice set of wheels or just stock wheels ask them to use sticky weights. they go inside your rim and are better than the ones outside of the rim. _________________

Yes, sticky weights are better, and nicer.
They will probably charge extra though. _________________

If they charge more then you went to a shitty shop. We charge the same no matter what weights we use. The sticky weights are actually cheaper for us just takes an extra min or two the balance them _________________ 2gn Member Feedback

If the wheel-tire is balanced it won't matter which type they use I guess. I used to have the clip one and now using the stick one. No difference at all. _________________ Fan

true but if u end up shelling out big bucks for a nice set or rims u dont want the weights to be visible. _________________ Official "I'm Going to Drive My Neon till it Dies" Club #000038

They can also just put clip-on weights on the back side of the wheel... _________________

They do that too. If you look, you have weights on the front and back of wheels normally, not always the outside.
Sticky weights are the way to go, always. I won't allow my wheels to be balanced any other way. And mine are just stock PT wheels! |

I didn't know this thread was going to get so many comments. I think the next time I get my wheels messed with, I'll get these so called "sticky weights"
Thanks for the info guys. _________________ *앤드류* (^_^)v

^Static balancing is just the process used to measure the runout/balance, it doesn't have anything to do with what kind of weights you use.
The sticky weights are much better, since they do no damage to the wheel/tire and can be hidden for cosmetic purposes.
I didn't know wheel balancing was such a misunderstood process. _________________ -Derek

I had a shop put just clip-on weights on the backside of the wheel. I wasn't too excited about it at first, but thinking about it, there are no weights visible period. Sticky ones are good, but depending on the wheel, you still see them. Plus, that adhesive is a bitch to get off when the weights get removed. _________________

A static balance is not as good as a dynamic balance. Static balancing a tire only eliminates or reduces the vertical travel or "hop" of a tire. While Dynamic balancing counteracts vertical and horizontal "side to side wobbling" travel.
You can static balance a tire and wheel assembly but you may still have slight vibrations. Dynamic balancing is greatly superior. At work we normally only static balance large truck tires. Some BFG A/Ts for example call for 4 or more ounces on each side. Now to do this I would have to fill almost a 1/4 of the rim flange with weight. As you can imagine this looks like crap. Also with a large mud tire the driver would hardly notice a difference between the two different methods of balancing.
Bottom line, Deal with the looks or have the shop clip weight the back and tape weight the front. This hides the weights and still gives you a dynamic balance.
Also if you really want to be anal they used the wrong style weights on the neon wheel. They used an MC weight when they should have used an LH style weight because the neon and most Chrysler wheels have a different taper on the flanges. _________________

LOL, quite possibly. The paint added more weight to the wheel/tire, so that could be throwing it off even more. _________________
