2001 R/T ... More Power ??

Post by nerox » Wed May 23, 2012 2:39 am

So i've got a 2001 Black R/T with a few mods:

Comp400 Cam
Crane Valve Springs
MPX 60mm TB
CAI
Magnaflow Camaro Muffler
Drilled & Slotted Discs
EBC Red Pads
Boogers
Solid Cradle Bushings
and some other irrelevant mods

and im looking for more power :-)

I'm not keen on a UDP coz i like my AC freezing cold like it is now and dont wanna drop power from the alternator whilst running a few KW of stereo :-)

so whats next that i can do to up my engine output?

maybe a LTH, other than that you're gonna have to start doing internal work on the engine like porting, higher CR, etc...

You are nearing the end of the bolt-on road. It's unfortunate that you want your ice cold A/C and tunes because losing those would help put your car on a diet. But, like Justin said, the next level of power will come from head work, LTH, port matching, etc.
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

Hello fellow brit!

Ive done the lot apart from LTH and turbo (obv) - My 2cents are, dont bother its not worth the agro for the gain. Fair enough I can keep up with my mate in his Civic type R but was it worth it??

No.

Turbo or no-go - Anything else is disapointing

Damn i've only just fitted a new head and valves, springs and cam so im not keen on opening the engine up again for a while.

SRT engine could be found from Germany but it'll be rediculously expensive!

how do they do inspections over there, are you required to pass an emissions test?

yeah we have a yearly safety check and they do emissions, my car usually passes easily but if it fails there are certain places you could leave a 'tip' and it might just pass anyway

but if i had an LTH it would definately fail everywhere because of the cat removal :-(

Get a LTH, then invest in a slimmer hi flow cat to fit in the tunnel behind the header, extend the O2 wires so it won't throw a code, and then you should pass your MOT no probs :)
Probs gna be expensive though! :(

UDP CEL is mostly 2002 PCM's.

Maybe a LTH is an option but id have to look into that a bit more ...

How about NOS? I know thats legal over here ... as long as you dont break the speed limit

It would be cheaper in the long run to go boosted. IDK what the prices are like over there but it's about $400 for a nitrous kit and average cost to fill a 10lb bottle is $40.

You aren't going to find a kit per-se. Doing a turbo right on a Neon (without swapping a SRT engine in) takes some careful planning and a good amount of cash to do it right. ASP on here is a very good resource for all things turbo. And Eric love boosting 2.0s

Damn, thats annoying, i was hoping to find an all-in-one kit.

hmm .... maybe ill have to have a re-think.

I would happily have done the SRT swap if i didnt just spend a bomb rebuilding head and changing some other stuff...

maybe i shold consider a weight reduction plan instead, or just use 99RON fuel instead of regular 95

Higher octane will get you a little boost in power, but mainly when you are standing on the stupid pedal. You will see a little more for part throttle, but the tiny bit of extra power causes you to unconsciously use more fuel, because well, it is making more power, and you just can't help it.

Higher octane fuel doesn't give you HP. Higher octane fuel is for reducing detonation in high comp, boosted, and N2O engines. Using the right fuel for your engine will give you the most power. I could spend the extra money on 93 octane for my car which is stock and it won't run as well as when I put in 87 or an 87/89 mix.

The gas itself doesn't, the tune/engine is what dictates the octane requirements. The higher the octane the more it decreases the chance of detonation. That's why it's needed for forced induction, high compression, N2O, and performance engines.

yes i already know all that. he already has the tune in the computer, so in reality its the gas that inables him to utilize that hp. all depends on how you look at it

Just put nitrous on it. $400 for a used kit, $40 to fill a bottle, and maybe $50 for a bottle heater. You can get a TON of 1/4 mile passes out of a bottle if you keep the shot size reasonable.
