Bulb#194 for a dome light

Post by gcretro » Mon Feb 13, 2012 9:53 am

I (wrongly) got an type 194 led bulb then noticed that the dome light is a festoon type bulb.

Any harm in wring the 194 in parallel with the existing dome light bulb?

It works great and the led I am told doesn't take much power. (2003 Neon SE)

I don't see why it would be a problem. Interesting though, that your 2003 has a festoon and mine uses a 194 bulb. There's two or three different dome light bulbs for the 2gns, but why more that one for the same year....

I believe the neons with sunroofs have the festoon type dome bulb, and the neons with no sunroofs have the 194 bulb.

mine is a 2004 SE, no sun roof. And it has the festoon type bulb.

This site says so too I should have checked before I got the 194 led.

i have a 01 and its a 194 i ordered one of those cheap $5 led panel dome light kits from amazon ( http://www.amazon.com/NEEWER%C2%AE-Ligh ... estoon+led ) none of the adapters it came with fit so i just cut the wires and wired it in. works great no problems and is extremely bright lights up the whole car so far id highly recomend it but ive only been running it for a month or so so i cant attest to how long itll hold up. id get ya some pics but the car is back home 2 hours away lol

oh and i dont have a sunroof so that explains why mine is a 194 not festoon

There is no such problems so you must take benefits of these led lights

These same LED light 'kits' are available at Advanced Auto. That's where I bought it.
I have it installed in my '98 Neon right now. :) Works good !

The 194 isn't nearly as bright as the proper bulb that goes in there. But I installed the 194 as I like it a little dimmer vs being a beacon for ships at sea.

JV76TL2 is the Mopar number for it, but it is apparently made of gold.

List Price: $39.35

Possibly why the festoon was used in more than the sunroof models. More cost cutting.

Edit That is for the entire assy. The correct bulb is 579, not 194

$39 is steep. for $11 more you can get caraudioholic24 to make you an LED board. I got 1 from him and it is sweet! He'll back up his work too as i'm sure other members can verify.

I bought a festune type bulb just got it in the mail today (blue led) I installed it, and when the dome light turns off, it still has a very dim light to it. I was worried that it would kill my battery, so now its just laying on my front seat lol.

Any LED light will glow in the dome, because there is always that small amount of current flowing through the oem bulb's filament anyways.

The bulb is part of the ground circuit for the cluster, and/or maybe something else that eludes my memory. You'll notice with the bulb missing, your odometer should read "FUSE" when you open the door.

So no, it won't drain the battery any faster than the oem bulb. There just isn't enough current there to heat the incandescent filament, but it is enough to make an LED glow.

Thanks for the tip. I do have one cluster light burned out. I don't see a fuse light on though. Just got new cluster lights with my dome lights. Ill be swapping them out soon.
