Free flowing but quiet muffler for N/A mild build?

Free flowing but quiet muffler for N/A mild build?

I'm planning on getting an 03-05 Neon, and putting on a ported magnum head with maybe a header and the stock Neon non-magnum intake, with an ATX for daily driving, And possibly a comp 200 or 400 cam.

I want a quiet exhaust, but free flowing, and was wondering if a stock DOHC muffler from a 1st gen Neon would be a good choice to keep it quiet and stay out of the way of my power? It'd have a stock or free flow cat and either the stock exhaust pipe or 2-1/2", haven't decided yet.

I think the 1st gen DOHC muffler would be an excellent choice. :thumbup:

I've run the DOHC 1st gen muffler on a 2 1/2in. exhaust system, along with a Magnum head and cam, and it was quiet & made power.
I was running the old Dynomax 1st gen DOHC muffler - which was loud, obnoxious, and buzzy.
I was much happier with the factory DOHC muffler.


You'll probably have to get an exhaust shop to modify the hangers to fit the DOHC 1st gen muffler, but it can be done. I have a friend who was running the 1st gen DOHC muffler on his 2005 SXT, and he was happy with it.

How bad is the stock 2nd gen factory muffler compared to the 1st gen DOHC muffler? Any flow numbers or dyno tests anywhere?

None that I am aware of, unfortunately. :( Unless someone else knows of such a thing ??

A stock DOHC muffler works pretty well until a car makes about 180HP. After that it's a hinderance.

I had a dynomax 2.5" exhaust on my NYG when I bought it. It had a pacesetter header, and a big dynomax cat, it sounded really well, just a hair louder than a stock car, but bassier. Taking a cat off a car, or a very free flowing cat will make a car sound raspy unless you use a stock style muffler.

I picked up a Walker Quietflow 3 #21290 first gen DOHC style dual outlet muffler from NAPA for $80, should that be a quiet yet free flowing choice?

Any guesses on the HP gain from swapping out the stock 2nd gen single exhaust factory muffler on my 5 SXT ATX Neon? I was hoping for 3-5.

If it's a bad choice tell me now, I can still return it, it's not on the car yet!

I'm planning on a pacesetter or magnum header and maybe a new free flow cat. Are Magnaflow cats good for that? I want HP and TQ, I don't care about clean exhaust.

The muffler is relatively quiet. As long as you retain a catalytic converter, it should be good.

On my '99 it has some rasp, but not horrible. This is with a short/mid length header (OBX PT cruiser), and no converter.

If you want it near silent, add one of these after the cat, or where there is room, in addition to the muffler. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/vpe-1140

As far as gains, just a muffler by itself will not really give you much. The original muffler does a decent job for what it is. You will gain a little with the muffler you bought, but I doubt you would even see 5 hp with out the muffler. But with other additions, a better muffler will help.

As for a high flow cat, have a universal welded to a aftermaket flex coupler that is welded to the original cat's flange. Get rid of the factory flex joint. It is about 2.00" ID

The Magnaflow direct fit isn't the best for flow either. It's inlet is worse than the factory cat.

I was thinking of a Pacesetter header with that flex / ball joint, and then I could use a universal style cat. I looked at a few Magnaflows at the local Advance Auto Parts, and they seem to be pretty open, with no diameter reductions just inside the cat on either side.

Magnum headers would be cheaper but have the square flange to deal with.

Only problem is the cost, I don't want to dump $300+ into the exhaust system alone. We'll see what kind of deal I can find on the parts.
