Are you sure it's the clutch, and not wheel spin?

Yeah, David and I have gone back and forth about that quite a bit... and... it is definitely the clutch. The dynamics of what happens, what we feel... is definitely NOT the tires. Definitely IS the clutch. This particular clutch has a 395 ft lb rating... we apparently need, well... more. Do you happen to know anyone who works at ACT (clutch manufacturer)...??

Well, the clutch is strong enough...it slips because it's oily.
I changed the oil a couple days ago, and when I had it up in the air, I pulled the rubber boot off the clutch fork and looked in the housing. There was oil film all over the pressure plate. And greasy oil seeping out all around the clutch fork boot. And oil dripping from the dust cover on the bottom.
So apparently the main seal is bad now. But despite this, I can still spin the tires from a stop and it holds 12psi with only minor slipping.
I'll be taking the trans back out to change the main seal and replace the friction disk before Carlisle next summer.

And that makes it suck even worse. Man, it sure looked in very good shape. with ~8,000 miles on it tops, who would have even considered ripping it out and replacing it?
At least you can replace just the disk and be pretty much good to go, as long as the flywheel and PP still look decent.
I doubt it is the cam position sensor, as the oil mainly runs down the rear bellhousing rail and leaves the clutch alone. I think what gets you is the air turbulence inside the bellhousing. And time. When the rear main let go on my 2.0 in the '99, it was literally pouring out. (There are pics in my Casper PL of the mess)
But I only drove it 40 miles to get it to my parent's house to work on it. The clutch was still fine. Everything else was coated with oil...

Just for fun, you could try a couple cans of brake cleaner. With the dust shield off, the engine running, and the clutch disk disengaged... spray the crap out it (maybe pre-soak it too). See if it will spin itself clean, just a tiny bit. (just don't stick your finger in there)
I'm sure there will still be oil in there, but for around town driving it might hold on a little bit better.
Then a periodic wipe under the dust shield to keep anything from building up again. It might hold on til it's warmer and you can drop that joker.

Yes, Josh... The "knocking" sound was certainly coming from the turbo getting gradually a little looser. Because... now the knocking is certainly GONE. Everything sounds tight and tidy again.
