Alternator upgrade, OEM 85amp Vs 100amp PT alt

Post by BlackRoseRacing » Wed Sep 20, 2006 8:53 pm

ok, long story short after the trip I just did my alternator is showing sign's that its going down hill....
I recomend the PT alternator for the 2.4....
Here is what I gathered so far:

2002 Dodge Neon 2.0 SOHC 85amp alt:
900rpm - 14.2volts
1500rpm - 14.3volts
2000rpm - 14.3-14.5volts
3000rpm - 14.5-14.6volts

2002 PT alt installed:
900rpm - 14.3 volts
1500rpm - 14.4-14.6volts
2000rpm - 14.3-14.7volts
3000rpm - 14.3-14.75volts

No accesories were run during the tests, and when the accesories were run, the PT alternator sustained better voltage than the stocker. Throttle response was greatly improved!
With the headlights(highbeam),the fogs, and even the defrosters running the PT alt was definatley an improvement.
As it stand right now I would recomend anyone with an alternator problem to upgrade to the 100amp PT unit...
As for the install, its was a bitch...but I did it in my garage with hand tools in roughly 1-2hrs....
Final comments, DO IT!!!!
If you need an alternator this is the BEST upgrade for the price!!!

How much does the PT alternator go for brand new? I'm tired of not being able to roll the windows down without the lights fading out and the car shuddering...

I got mine from NAPA with a lifetime warranty for roughly $175-$200. Just about $150-$200 cheaper than through the dealer. As for the headlights flickering, mine just flicker once when I hit the button, not when the window is actually moving.
And for those out there with stereos and a UDP, the PT alternator comes with an oversized pulley compared to the stocker, almost 1/2-3/4 inches wider in diameter. So its like having an ODP installed on the alternator from the factory.
I'm going to be hitting the road shortly and going to be hitting the thruway too, I'll see if there are any issues with it and I'll post it here.

All connectors are the same, mounting is the same.....
Its pretty bad MSRP its $110 cheaper through the dealer to get a PT alternator than it is to get a neon, OE neon non-turbo $394.00msrp
As for what the difference is with an SRT, I cant tell ya since I dont have one to compare...

Even though its a post resurection, I still have the PT alternator in my car with no problems whatsoever. As for the pulley on the alternator, someone brought up that because it has an oversized pulley on it it actually is an UDP Vs an ODP like I origonally thought.

^^
Not sure since the part numbers are different from the 05 and the 02 model, but I doubt they put a 100amp alternator in the neon since most of them were equipped with an 85amp alternator for years.

good to hear.. seems like mines getting a bit worse for wear.. might have to look into this once it's done-for. Just wondering, was the original pulley on the PT ALT bigger? and if so, could you swap the two for potentially more power output? like swap on the neons, so it spins faster, being smaller and all?? lemme know what ya think, as im a stereo guy, and have a udp... no bad side effects at all yet.. just would like the option to have more power, when needed.

In essence, if the pulley on the PT cruiser unit is bigger than the factory unit, you would not really be gaining what you could gain by putting the factory Neon pulley on it. You would notice a huge difference over stock Neon output.

I am in the process of getting the PT unit, then putting an ODP pulley on that unit, plus I have already installed an Optima Yellow Top, and upgraded ALL of my grounds under the hood, next I will be upgrading the output wire from the alt to the battery, that along with the PT unit, and smaller pulley, I should be able to shock the crap out of myself!!!!

Can you elaborate on the PITA of the install of your alternator, was it because the dimensions are different or something, or just a general pain in the ass because you hate doing that kind of work? LOL.

Hey BRR, is there another alternator available that will fit the Neon that you know of that's a higher output?

One that came on something stock of course.

I thought I would also add in that Ohio Generator has an alternator for our cars that is 160amps.

As for the install, it was a matter of jumping under the car, over the car, back and forth to finangle the alternator out through the top of the motor..

Stupid question...

If the PT Cruiser alternator pulley is larger than the Neon alternator pulley, what size belt should be purchased? Or can the same size belt be used for both Neon and PT alternators?

The same belt can be used since the alternator is adjustable.....

So from your list above, could I assume that the 01-05 120amp pt alternator would work on my 02? The bigger amps and larger pulley being sufficient to off set the voltage losses I'm seeing from the UDP when running accessories such as lights, defrost, etc...?

Yea I know this is a really old thread but it's what came up when I did the search lol. Good info if it works...

You would actually need a smaller pulley on the alternator to regain the RPM loss from the UDP. I imagine the neon pulley would swap.

Don't take this statement the wrong way but if you say I'd need a smaller pulley, what's te purpose of the overdrive pulley?

Folks,
Just want to say that I did this 'modification' on one of my 1st gen Neons last night ( using a 2001 PT Cruiser alternator, to replace the one I had.)

My old alternator was less than 'marginal' for a long time, and lately, it seems to have been getting worse, so I replaced it and did the "upgrade".
The PT N/A Alternator, "bolts in" like it grew in there. :D Bolts up and plugs in like stock.

WOW, what a difference.
Although I haven't driven the car yet, (except to pull it out of the garage), I can say that it starts up much quicker and idles smoother.

If you ever need to replace your alternator, just DO IT and upgrade.

Im confiused. I read in another post, the PT 2.4 will not fit. Something about the mounting bracket being too small or the plug being different.

So to clear things up:

00-05 neon alternators are all the same in amps (85)
2.4 PT alternator will bolt up and be plug n play to any neon
2.4 Turbo PT alternator WILL NOT fit a neon

Am I right?

Correct.

Sort of. 2005 neons got the higher amperage alternator.

So it's safe to say that since I have to change the alternator on my 02 atx I can use an 01-05 PT 2.4n/a alternator which is 120amp

Yep, or a 2005 120 amp neon alternator.

If I had not gotten that SRT/PT GT alternator for extremely cheap, and the connector was included, I wouldn't have went to the trouble.

Tho possibly, if you use the PT GT mounting brackets, the 136 might be a bolt on.
