Things that I see during work- a continuing thread
I've decided to start a continuing thread, "Things that I see during work." Some of you may not know that I drive for a living (two jobs, six or seven days a week) so I am on the road a lot and see some interesting things. Here is my first post.
A few weeks ago, I was filling up the company vehicle at the Murphy USA gas station in Portland, IN. The gas station sits in a corner of a Wal-Mart parking lot. This corner is maybe two feet above the level of the parking lot and has two entrances with an island between them. This island has a curb at the Wal-Mart parking lot level and another one at the gas station level with a lower grassy area between the two curbs. Imagine my shock when someone in a Cavalier drove in a straight line across the Wal-Mart lot and right over BOTH curbs in an attempt to get to the pump island where I was parked while fueling. He made it up to the gas station level but popped the front passenger tire and broke the radiator in the process.

I get to see alot of interesting things when I grade papers or exams...
The funniest one I've seen lately was asking about one of Wagner's greatest fans (I'm summing up the question) who happened to be "Mad" King Ludwig... Well one my students didn't know the answer and wrote:
King Leonidas and the proceeded to give the whole Spartan Speil.... On a mid term.... well... it at least gave me a chuckle, but I still had to mark it wrong...

I work in parking garages all over DC "metro" area. I too drive all the time as I drive 100 miles round trip just going to and from work and I put another 50 to 100 miles on work vechical.
Aside from 9/11 stuff and DC sniper stuff here are some of the best I've seen.
Around the white house they have these pillers across driveways and side walks. Well some of them go up and down to allow traffic to pass. Well I saw a marked Secert Service lifted off the ground by them. They caught the car just past the engine and lifted the front of the car 3 feet up in the air.
Pulling out of the shop to go home one day and a guy goes walking past the front of the entry as I stop for on coming traffic I see a metro cop SUV go by rolling code 3. No big deal in DC till I turn to look for on coming traffic again and see SUV stop door open siren going both officer out guns drawn and telling the guy that just past me moments ago to get down on the ground.
H2 enter a gargae that clearance is 5'10" and get stuck at bottom of the ramp.
Just last week a starving student moving truck with power lift gate got stuck pulling into driveway which was on a steep hill. They wedge the lift gate into the blacktop and the rear wheels weren't touching the ground.
On GW parkway (geroge washington)
There are no trucks signs posted everywhere due to bridges being 12' tall. I once pasted a tracktor trailer that must not have paid attention to it cause he hit the bridge took the top of his sleeper cab clear off and came to a stop about dead center of his trailer taking off a good 2' height wise. It V the trailer like crushing a soda can between your hands. The legs that they put down to allow the tracktor to pull out were dug into the ground. They had to cut the trailor to get out from under the bridge.
Also seen a tour bus hit that same bridge thankfully no one was on it as it took the roof off too.
And rats that are the sizes of dogs

Let me see.... Messicans trying to run across I45. Guys dancing on the street corner for money (my brother and I saw 2 in 15 mins...) Before 1960 had an underpass under I45, tractor trailers getting stuck. The drugstore dept.'s truck that was at the light like 20 feet from the store broke down and one of those mega wreckers had to tow the trailer to the loading dock then tow the truck away. Texits (crossing 4+ lanes of traffic rapidly cutting everybody off just to make an exit). State troopers racing each other, one in a crown vic and the other in a camaro. HPD racing each other on the feeder of I45 and Rankin at like 1:00am when I was about to go to a street race.....

i used to work at a boat dealership, and not much happens there. The guy i used to work with constantly backed into boats with the forklift, and we almost flipped a corvette edition speed boat w/ trailer over with the crane.....and some guy had us custom fab a brass stripper pole into his malibu wakeboard boat....thats about it lol.

I see people coming into our office asking if this is the Dentists office when of course it doesn't say DENTIST on the door but they come in anyway thinking it is. We have to tell them all the time that it's upstairs on the other side of the building. One lady today asked how to get there so I told her to go back up the hill to the front of the building... she didn't understand how to get the front of the builder but yet she drove down the hill, the same hill, to the rear to get to our office.

On Saturday March 24th around 11 p.m., I was driving into Hicksville, OH on SR 2 and saw a guy who had driven into the road and totalled the front of his car. Let me explain... SR 2 is several feet above the level of lawns and parking lots on the south side of town so all I could see as I was driving by was the roof of his car. I got to thinking that something didn't look right so I turned around and went back to check it out. He was sitting in the car with the dome light on, looking at some kind of paperwork. I parked the company car (narrow road- no shoulders), turned on the emergency lights and walked across the highway towards his car. I tried to get his attention for a few minutes and, when he finally saw me, he opened the door and started to get out. I asked him if he was hurt and he replied (VERY drunk), "I guess that I should have used the other entrance!" That's when I noticed the tire tracks in the grass behind him... he had just aimed the car towards the highway, floored it and ran smack into an earthen wall! He pleaded with me for $20 for gas but I told him to get back into the car and stay put (remember, this was on a narrow highway and cars were whizzing by!). I drove to the police department but the building was empty and locked! I ended up calling 911 and I imagine that the poor kid probably ended up with a DUI. Now before anyone says anything about the old man picking on the kid, I just didn't want him to get hurt and I was on the clock and couldn't hang around.
At 1:33 a.m., I hit a large, stray dog on SR 9 in the middle of nowhere just north of Huntington, IN. I thought that it was a deer when it first walked out in the roadway- it was as tall as the hood of the Impala that I was driving! I managed to lock up the wheels and turn the car completely sideways across the highway trying to miss it but the road was wet and I caught it with the passenger-side front bumper. I turned the car around, shined the headlights back at the impact point and got out and looked but couldn't find the dog. Stupid people that let animals run loose...
