How long to replace timing belt, tensioner, water pump????

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

Depends on how experienced and mechanically inclined you are. And how many times you have done it really helps too.

My first time on my DOHC 1st gen it took 2 weeks.......well thats kinda a lie. I had to replace the head too.

The second time was on my 2gn. It took 6ish hours? The hardest part for me was getting the crank pulley on and off, the big aluminium engine bracket that the accessory belt tensioner mounts to, and getting the t-belt tensioner set up correctly making sure the spring tang is in its proper place.

If this is your first time I would suggest setting a whole day aside for the job. This really isnt a job you want to rush or halfass. Otherwise you'll be doing it again along with a headswap.

Engine doesn't need to be dropped but should have side motor mount removed and the motor jacked up to make things much easier to get to. And if it's your first time you better set aside a whole day to do it.

Yeah the motor does not need to be dropped. If your brake job cost several hundred dollars my wallet already hurts for you to see the t-belt replacment bill.

The engine doesn't need to be dropped out of the car.. But jacking it up and down is a must.

Expect a shop to charge 6-900 including parts.

It doesn't, but that is how techs make money.

Oddly enough, my shop said they could change the accessory belt tensioner in an hour. But you have to do the same thing to the motor to get the damn thing off.

Not sure how they figure flat rate these days, but the story I heard when I worked at a dealership many moons ago, was the hours were averaged between three sessions of doing the particular job. Naturally the 1st time, the technician would take a while, but on the third time, they would have it down.
So basically an experienced flat rate tech can make good money, but a novice tech is going to struggle for a while. This was back in the mid 1980's. The old bastid mechanic there would pull in between $500 to $700/week back then. He was a dickhead, but he knew all the tricks.

This is where you learn to put up with shit, and absorb some knowledge.
