Oops... replaced timingbelt and waterpump but not tensioner

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

Oops... replaced timingbelt and waterpump but not tensioner

Post by Forest Green 2k » Mon Feb 28, 2011 3:46 pm

A couple years ago when I did my big tune up, I forgot to replace an important part along with the others.... the timing belt tensioner. My engine has 130k, how much danger am I in?

Mechanical tensioner isn't as much to worry about as it would be if it was a hydraulic.

It's really a crap shoot with tensioners, some last 60K and some last 150k. Mine sounded like a diesel at 70k, but I'm not sure if it was the tensioner or water pump. I replaced both and all is good, but I believe the tensioner was the problem.
