Hi everyone,

Let me apologize for the stupid question I am asking, but I believe you guys will tell me for sure what I should do. Here is what happened. I recently bought a Neon, 2005, 2.4L. Right away I took it to the diagnostics to see what things have to be changed or repaired right away. Among other things, I had to get the new harmonic balancer in. So I went ahead to order it, and the salesman said I needed 2 of them. I am not a tech guy, still I feel that for an l4 I need only one, am I right?

Again, sorry for the question but I feel like I messed up a bit.
Thanks for any advice in advance!

Salesman? I would check with a parts counter person if you are working with a dealership. If it is basically a used car dealer, I would go elsewhere for a second opinion.

You only need one.

Are you doing the work yourself?

If so, you will need to rent a puller from AutoZone or similar store, and this is the best way to get it fully seated onto the crank:

This is the stuff I bought for reinstallation, if there is any interest:
1 99055A135 1 Each Metric Class 8.8 Plain Steel Threaded Rod, M12 Size, 1 Meter Length, 1.75 Mm Pitch
2 60715K11 1 Each Steel Ball Thrust Bearing, For 1/2" Shaft Diameter, 1-7/32" Od, Shielded
3 91005A038 1 Each Metric Black-oxide Steel Flange Nut, M12 Screw Sz, 1.75mm Pitch, 19mm W, 17mm H O’all

All the Items are from Mc Master Carr http://www.mcmaster.com/ but you could prolly get a damper installer for a little more $ This woked well tho. You don't have to worry about stripping the crank threads this way. just thread the rod all the way in for full engagement.

But if you can locate an installer the threads have to be 12mm x 1.75 pitch. Most I seen were 1.5 pitch. Hence why I went that route.

Since this is an 2.4L we are talking about, could the salesmen have been referring to the Balance Shafts? There are 2 of them, and they do cancel out harmonic vibrations, etc etc

Good point, or the parts guy misunderstood what was asked. Plus salesmen are sometimes extremely clueless as to what they are talking about.

It would be really tough to tell if the balance shafts were damaged without tearing the engine apart though. So a basic diagnostic/look over would not reveal that.

And really, if they were damaged, I would think there would be other bottom end issues, since the only wear part is the journals.

If the chain broke, then there would be no justification in changing the shafts, just put a chain kit in there. Of course that would be a bit more involved than just pulling the damper. You would need to pull the oil pump to replace the chain, as there is no master link.

Above tool in use with homeade spacer installing the crank sprocket:

Or just deal with the added vibration.

Thank you for replying! I am pretty sure that it is about the harmonic balancer, as the guy who did inspection told me that the problem is about it. I will have a store do the job for me, I am not that skilled to go by my own. Thanks for clarification, now I'll go ahead and order the balancer. Now I know I need only 1 for sure.

If your purchasing a car from a used car lot and they told you the motor needs a dampner, I would have left right away. Why would they sell you a used car on there lot that needs engine repair? And personally this would be the first SRT4 I've heard of needing a dampner replaced unless it was modified, then again why would they be trying to sell you a car on the lot that needs engine repair Rolling Eyes
