Magnum intake project is complete.... with pics!

Have a question about how to make horsepower going the all motor route, here's where to ask it.

Magnum intake project is complete.... with pics!

Post by daaboots » Mon May 22, 2006 7:46 pm

Hi everyone. I finally finished my magnum intake project, and it was worth every penny! There is defiantly a power increase throughout the entire RPM range. Plus the sound is amazing, especially when those secondary’s open up!

My car is an 05 ATX. I used a Harlan RPM window switch and a single relay to activate the motor. There are two minor problems I came across when doing this install: 1) You need the intake manifold bolts from a magnum engine, eight to be exact. You can pick these up at any DCX dealership. The non magnum bolts are too long. 2) The manifold support bracket will need to be modified in order to work properly, or you can make a new bracket. Aside from that, everything went very smooth.

Here's a few pics of the old manifold comming off. You'll need to disconnect all the wires on the harness tha runs through the middle of the runners. For me, that included all the injectors, starter, A/C, and something else. Its a pain!
Image

Here is an image of the wiring diagram I used. Because of the way it is connected, I didn’t need a switched +12V source. The down side of this is the fact that the Harlan RPM window switch is always powered on. I’m hoping this won’t cause problems down the line.
Image

Instead of cutting into the RPM signal wire, I decided to add a connection right inside the connector. The connector is a bit of a pain to dissemble, but it looks very slick when its all done.
Image

I hid all of the wires in black wire protector and ran them along factory wire routes. Everything is nice and hidden.

And finally, the relay and RPM window switch. I’m very proud of this setup. Everything is hidden in the fuse and relay center. This thing has a spare spot for a relay and fused power supply. All you need to do is add some wires.

Here’s a photo of the finished product.

Thanks for looking everybody! I’m happy to answer any questions.

The butt dyno is telling me I gained a few hp. How many? I really donno. I'm very pleased with the results. I'm sure once I get a magnum head and header the intake will be more useful. Idle to 3 seems to have a bit more torque bit is hard to tell. There is a very, very nice power band between 3-4K. Kinda goes a bit flat from 4-5K. When the secondaries kick in at 5K I can feel it pull a bit stronger than before. In all i'm very happy with the results.

Wow, that's a very slick installation. I'm assuming the round cylinder tucked into the fuse/relay box is the RPM switch?

I love the concept of secondaries, my old beater of a Taurus SHO had secondaries and it was a blast to drive. As soon as you hit 3k it was a whole different animal.

^^Yeah, the black round cylinder is the Harlan RPM switch. Great little thing - very easy to install and program.

Been getting a few question, so I added some pics showing the removal of the old intake. Hopefully someday I'll have the time to do a full blown write-up.

could you elaborate on what you did to the exterior surfaces of the manifold to get such a good finish. it looks like you removed the large casting "things" by the injectors/fuel rail. looks like a nice finish.

Sure. I started with a heavy duty angle grinder fitted with a sanding head. This removed all the rough casting. Then i used a palm sander with a coarse grit and slowly worked up to a fine grit. I used a dremel tool to get into the small cracks.

Took a lot of time, but it was worth it. I'd like to sand it more someday. I only took it up to about a 300 grit. I'd like to go up to 1000, then use some metal polish.

Thanks :D My old job was car detailing so I know how to keep the car clean and shiny. I usually clean and shine the engine bay once a month. I got the idea for the polished intake from a guy named Roach. He has a black turbo'd Neon and an intake that looks like glass =P~

just got my mag intake on monday and will be gasket matching...not sure if I will go thru the trouble of polishing it, although it does look berry berry nice.

I will need to figure something out as I have a non-mag aem cai that I still want to use, so I will have to find a way to make it work (possibly replace the TB to mani piping) haven't really looked at it yet (it wont be going on for awhile...doing a mag head swap at the same time.)

I found it on Neons.org about 2 years ago. Paid something like $250 for it.

From reading the how to's it seems most use a window switch and a WOT. I still can't figure out why you would want the butterflies open from 0-3200 rpm at WOT...and it sounds like people have them open from about 5K on up and at WOT.

I think I am just going to use a RPM switch and have them open from 4500-6800. Wouldn't it be too much air in the low rpm? Don't you want more velocity in the lower rpm? Can somebody explain teh science behind the way you are setting them up?

The way the runners are tuned it's supposed to be like that.

Yeah Jerry is right on. At the low rpms, the air velocity is so low, its better to have more "runners" that way a larger amount of low velocity air can get in the head. Midrange its best to have the higher velocity of the singler runner, then for the top end its already moving fast, so you wanna cram as much in there as you can.

Holy thread resurection! Welcome Noobie!

You will be better off buying a complete IM from the FS boards on here. The lower part from a dealer will cost you far more than what you will pay for a used complete unit. Search the PN requests (engine) for an idea of pricing.

Nevermind, I'll save you the trouble...

viewtopic.php?t=41287

And those prices are prolly not current.

If you can get the top half for a reasonable price, you could sell it here, once you meet the FS requirements, to help buy a complete IM. It has uses as a box style IM. Some ppl would be happy to buy it from you as long as you don't try to make a killing from it. Complete Mag IM's go from $125 to $250, depending on condtion, etc. You could prolly sell the upper for $75 to $100 depending if it is new/used/modded.

Rpm switch activates a relay at whatever rpm it is set to.

WOT = wide open throttle. It activates your relay at WOT

I say relay, because you don't want to hook the item being controlled directly to the switch.

Search around the site, read up on related topics. At the top is a search tab. just click it, and type in what you are looking for. You may get nothing, or a million threads to look through...
