Re: Saving an 02 Neon R/T

Before or after the seal was replaced?

Image

The seal should only go in flush with the head.

But as long as it doesn't leak, it should be fine.

Is it the picture, or is the sealing surface actually dented in looking?

Re: Saving an 02 Neon R/T

Awesome! I bet it is very very rare to see a 2nd gen Neon out in the UK. Let along a R/T. I RARELY see 2nd gen R/T's out here in the states now since the car is getting older. Hope you can get that crank pulley off! I am sure some heat will help get it off too. I think all export neons overseas wer...

Re: Intro (and how I saved an R/T)

It's my understanding that all export 2000 to 2005 neons had the same front fascia, etc from start to finish. No face lift in 2003. I'm not sure if they changed up the rear spoiler, or tails or just kept the same fascia and export tail lights. I imagine they stayed the same to reduce costs. Because ...

Re: Don't rely on Gates for timing components...

All 8 of the exhaust valves are bent, and 4 of the intakes. The 4 intakes were all in the left head, so that side managed to take out every valve. I guess at 3000 rpm, the cam and gear have enough inertia to keep rotating. I poured penetrating oil in the ports of the unbent appearing intake valves t...

Re: Happy Independence Day, everyone!

Happy belated Fourth! Have had the granddaughter visiting keeping me busy, not getting much else done. Being we don't get her too often anymore, time spent with her takes precedence. You can't get that back... Had the 4th and 5th off, only because it is slow at work, and they basically shut it down ...

Re: MyNeonSaysHi Mod Log: Stone White

The CF spoiler kind of ties in with the tinted windows. Since neon reverse lights generally suck anyways, maybe put some tint to the reverse light part only, (nothing extremely dark, just a light tint) and see how that look ties the tails to the spoiler. You could get some cheap static cling type ti...

This is the weirdest leak problem cause I've ever seen!
Well if the valve can now seal properly, maybe the cheapest fix, other than the money already spent on refrigerant. :)

Re: Don't rely on Gates for timing components...

That is a huge bummer though :( Hope you get it on the road soon. Is it a manual or auto car? I see they are 3100lbs 170hp/170tq. It gets 30 plus MPG highway, has more power than my 2.4 swapped neon Probably not that much more power? Neon weighs like 600lbs less haha. I am sure your 2.4 is quicker....

Re: Anyone know the common fail points for an 04 base Neon? A?C?

Don't add more oil. It will displace the refrigerant quantity. The oil will not be lost with a slow leak.

Sealer can be bad news depending on which side of the system the leak is on. It can clog the system permanently.

Re: Don't rely on Gates for timing components...

All Gates brand components replaced at the same time. Tensioner and idlers still good. Everything turns smooth.

I'll be replacing the valves myself, provided there isn't catastrophic damage to the heads/pistons.

Re: 6/29/2019 Dayton Spring meet

The main PITA would be changing the spark plugs, or adjusting the valves/pulling heads, but in all, everything else isn't that bad. The exhaust header and timing belt is actually a lot easier than the neon, as far as working room. The exhaust studs point straight down, three per side. No feeling aro...

18 years and the A/C still works in my '01. I almost hate having to break it open to swap body shells. It can get so cold, that in the humid hot days, the air coming out of the vents is white. I can only run it when the car is actually moving at speed, otherwise it kills the engine. Engine is out, hope to get it on the stand and pull it apart over the weekend.

At least it is a thousand times easier to remove than a conventional front wheel drive. Literally less than an hour and a half, taking it easy.

Now working on it in the engine bay, is another matter.

Re: Don't rely on Gates for timing components...

I admit they HAD to get better than the ones from the late 70-80's that completely turned me off on the brand. The same can be said for the big three American made car brands and Harley Davidson. Chrysler didn't go bankrupt for no reason at all. They (all) were pumping out pretty much garbage in th...

I am not the only member that has has issues recently with their water pumps. Lucky it was mostly leaking issues, and not seizing issues. Re: 6/29/2019 Dayton Spring meet

Well good thing I didn't go. If I had driven the Impreza, I would have been really screwed due to Gate's inferior crap. Their POS timing bet broke yesterday on the way to work. Driving to Dayton and back, It would have exceeded the miles traveled just on the way there. Now I have probably $1500 in r...

Don't rely on Gates for timing components...

I cannot recommend a Gates Timing kit. Go with Mopar, or another good name brand. I have now had two Gates Brand timing kit failures in the last two years. I will never buy another Gates brand product. Had the water pump fail at under 30,000 miles on the neon, and the timing belt I installed 2 years...

Re: Anyone know the common fail points for an 04 base Neon? A?C?

Unfortunately, the only related thing (1gn neons) the evaporator has been known to be a trouble spot. I found this out after having it all completely apart, to clean debris out of the HVAC module, while I had everything stripped from the interior in my '99. I can't say if they used a different evapo...

Fiberglass is probably heavier too. Not that it is a huge piece, but... When I had to replace the Kaminari front fascia, when someone backed into it, the carbon fiber unit cost more, but with shipping, it was actually about $40 cheaper due to the weight difference. If it was lean or rich enough to really hurt something, you would get a CEL and code for it. But it doesn't mean it is optimal if you don't.

It never hurts to verify everything is within acceptable limits.

You'll want to use clear with hardener in it. Otherwise it will yellow, or flake off eventually from the engine bay heat.

I used wheel clear coat, which help up for a few years, but it is showing it's weaknesses.
