If you just twist the wires together and tape them, you will increase the resistance and they will no longer work properly. Resulting in poor performance, mileage, and possibly fry your cat. Use the same gauge wiring...

this is probably a stupid question, but did you make sure the the caliper bolt/slide pin was pushed all the way back to slip it on? I'm still trying to figure out what exactly the issue is, but that's the first thing that came to mind.
