I wouldnt sandblast the springs if I were you. Most springs are heat treated and coated for reasons of strength, rebound & compression, and corrosion protection.

As for the struts. Like Jason said, "just protect the strut shaft very very well so there isn't any pitting which would ruin the strut".

Actually there may be something wrong. If you turn the key without turning the car on and the light stays on wait to see if it is followed by a ding/charm. If so I would take it in and have them fix that. look in the owners manual. It will tell you the same thing
