Ok iv seen the ? around here and there but no real numbers or guesses. I was wondering with a CAI UDP and this cam where would u be for hp? or the real ? is how much can u gain just from the cam with thoes other mods? I want to do a LT header but i dont want to loose all my low end because i do a ton of city driving.

My r/t pulls like hell up to 100mph; mods are cai, comp 400 cam, kirk LTH w/o cat. I am told it should have no problems running a 14.7-14.8 in street trim. The comp 400 is by far the best hp mod you can do for the magnum head (it is perfectly match for the intake/exhaust flow rate). The comp cams tech/help/phoneline guy told me that around 25 crank hp can be expected with the 400 cam on a basically stock magnum motor.

15 hp at the wheels would be a good conservative number to start with. comp cams (not me) said around 25 crank hp. i have yet to dyno, but i would guess i have 150hp at the wheels. best of all, the cam will help get the most gains out of all other mods.

Plus it stays within the stock powerband...i wasnt aware you could get that kind of power out of the Comp 400...i might have to reconsider buying one and take a couple hundred out of the r/t turbo fund...

the 400 would be nice with the turbo - I think that is what Roach had on his 400hp Turbo 2gn Magnum.

And this may be a dumb question, but would an adjustable cam gear really be needed with the Comp 400, or will the stocker do fine? And how much more power would be made with an adjustable?

also, with the comp 400, do you need to upgrade the springs at all, or will the stock R/T springs handle everything?

The stock magnum springs are on par with the crane springs i think.

i am using stock magnum springs and stock cam gear, no problems. The 400 cam was designed for use with the stock cam timing, so stock cam gears is fine and an adjustable one would only provide marginal gains if any (assuming you havn't done anything to affect the cam timing). The comp tech guy said that magnum springs are fine, but a little (very little) valve float MAY occure with them. I have around 10,000 miles since the install of my cam and have had no problems with stock magnum springs and other valvetrain parts. The 400 cam does make the valvetrain noticably more nosiey.

how is the idle with this cam? just wondering.....

get an adjustable cam gear - these are good, especially with a new, bigger cam. I have read that when you retard timing by 2 degrees, it helps boost power. At least on the 14.
Dont know about idle quality, but I heard they are fine.
My car idles like a kitty, but the whole car shakes like a fat lady on a minibike. Due to the stiff suspension, strut bars, and inserts for motor mounts.

The cam idle is good. I will try to get a video posted somtimes this weekend. It has a wicked loop for about 10 sec and then the computer pulls the ignition timing and the loop disappears.
The reason the crane cam gets more power (on N/A applications) when retarded is that it is tuned for higher rpm power (above 6,850 rpm) and i believe that the crane 14 has 3 deg advance built-in(when used with stock cam gear).

Would this cam be a good choice with a Ported and Polished magnum head as well as the mods in my sig.

so would you recommend getting the valves and valve springs? I realize you've had your's for 10,000 miles without any problems, but I would think just to be on the safe side to avoid valve float they'd recommend to pick up the stronger valves and springs...I didn't think the cam alone would give much of a gain, guess that's the next mod to look into...

stronger (stainless) valves are completly overkill unless you are going to be doing major headwork (taking down the valve guide, ect) or reving you motor above the stock rev limiter. the comp guy recomended the mopar valvesprings over the crane ones (the mopar springs are rated for higher lift then the crane springs). cams (more particularly choosing the correct cam for your application and correctly tuning it ) are key to unlocking hp.
white2000neon wrote:Would this cam be a good choice with a Ported and Polished magnum head as well as the mods in my sig.
if you are going to be doing major headwork your best beat would be to get a custom grind cam (for maximum power) (crane even has a 005, 006, 007grinds which may or may not meet your heads needs) . the 400 is great for the stock head and some minor (port match, smoothing, polishing) head work
choosing a cam for best performace is more then just picking up the biggest off-the-self cam you can buy. the lift, durintion, and lobe placment needs to be matched to any particular head (not all heads are equal!).
the comp 400 cam just happens to be properly tuned (the only one that i know of) for a stock magum head (which has its own particular characterisics)

Its not a race ported head its more of a street port to flow a little more than a normal magnum. I think its got a 5 angle valve job also. When i get the head i'm going to take it to the porter around me to see what he says about it since he does some really good work and maybe let him work some of his magic on it.
edit
I called up comp cams and they said it should work perfectly fine with a ported magnum head because your increasing the breathing capabilities of the engine.

what about for non-magnum motors? Specifically an 04 sxt
What cam or whatnot is recomended for more hp?

Either an 01' Magnum cam (or really any magnum cam, just 01' is the best) or the Crane 12 would probably be best.

crane 12, comp 200
crane 14 if you plan on opening up
both intake and exhaust ports
comp 400 if you want to hog out your exhaust ports and leave your intake ports alone

you may want to even look into the 1995 shoc cam. IMO it would be best suited for the flow characteristics of a stock (non-ported) regular sohc head. the 95 cam does have some overlap tho (which is good and bad depending one what your looking for)
