change battery from top post to side post?

Post by jT » Mon Aug 14, 2006 10:49 am

i want to change out my battery mainly for two reasons

1) the battery i'm running looks kind of old, its not even a sealed battery, and umm ..............

2) i have an old side post from my old car that has a little higher cca and its just sitting around

also my terminals had so much corrosion on them (a LOT for just having the car for less than a year) i actually snapped the end of the bolt on the negative trying to get it off... it still connects and is tight enough where i have power, but it needs to be replaced

i used a steel brush to get a lot of the corrosion off, but it was literally on there in layers and didnt get everything completely clean

so.. while im in there i want to do the ground wire upgrade as much as i can..... but since i want to go side post i also need to do the +12v wires (yes i could just use the same wire and change the end, but what fun is that)

so has anyone done this?

i havent looked very close at where the 12v runs to, other than the fuse box... any tips? and should the new 12v be around 4awg like the ground upgrade?

or are you reading this saying "just replace the clamp and use the damn top post, you moron"? :P

hmmm well i dont know about the battery that fit neons but optima makes dual post batteries so you could do the car stuff off the top post and the stereo stuff off the side post. umm not really sure why you would want to go to side post completely though and as for the corrsion put some baking soda on the terminals

May want to try napa or something. I'm pretty sure you can get top post to side post adapters.

Yep. Just use the adaptors for the time being, that is if they don't contact any other metal or get in the way of anything. No sense in cutting up the cables. The adaptors look just like the posts on your battery now with a hex head at the bottom and threads below that.
