If you're talking about the bobble strut that stops the motor from rocking, and is attached to the car...I was under the impression they were 1st Gen only.

The pencil strut is a tube like piece of metal that bolts into the same location as the lower torque strut on the 2GN neons .........

It just helps prevent flexing of the drivetrain. For those who don't know what it is get in your car and turn the steering wheel all the way toward the passenger side. Then get out and look in the wheel well you will see a metal pipe type deal with a flat part at either end where the bolts go through....can't miss it it's right in the wheel well and it is black in color. All three of my 2gns have it....four if you count the wrecked SRT I gutted.

is there an official name for it, cuz im currently studying suspension in school and ive never come across the term "pencil strut". im assuming its suspension related based on the post above stating it is visible inside the wheel well.

Yup, it's the deal that has to come off every time you wanna take the lower engine mount off. I always figured it was just to help tie the car together, and prevent unwanted movement. Although I'd never heard it called a "pencil strut". I just called it a "thingy" or a "deal".

i got the pencil strut name from the FSM, so that is what it is called. does any one have one laying around somewhere i could buy? mine is missing for some reason and i've been very disapointed in how much movement i feel in the drive train in my car. could this be it?

thanks,

 I've always refered to it as the Pencil Strut as thats what it's called in the FSM. I'd also asume that it's there like quicksilvr said, to tie the car together and take some of the stress of the k-frame and transfer it into the body. :-?
