Ask all your n00b questions here. I will start...

I noticed my car is a bit under the minimum mark on oil... So I got a quart of oil. I am running Mobil 1 10w-30... Well I was wondering when is a good time to check your oil? After the engine has been running for a bit on a flat surface of course. Or when the engine is cold? I added about half of a quart and I am guessing I am going to have to wait for it to cool down to see if it went up any...?  :D

Straight off of DCx TechConnect...

ENGINE OIL LEVEL CHECK
The best time to check engine oil level is after it has sat overnight, or if the engine has been running, allow the engine to be shut off for at least 5 minutes before checking oil level.

Checking the oil while the vehicle is on level ground will improve the accuracy of the oil level reading. Remove dipstick and observe oil level. Add oil only when the level is at or below the ADD mark (Oil Level).

wow. I'm obsessive about having my oil pretty much full. I check it every time i get gas. Running a quart low seems like a bad idea to me when you've only got 4 quarts in your oil pan. Then again my friends 3.5 liter altima v-6 only has a 3.75 quart oil pan. anyone else have any thoughts?

I think our cars take 4.5 quarts..... I am running 5 quarts, because I have a bigger oil filter.... I added a quart today. Gonna check it tomorrow....

our cars take 4.5 quarts but i just put 5 in with the right filter and the oil level is dead on at the full mark.

Another noob question for yah guys.

I noticedabout 4 coils on my rear coil springs (suspension) are touching each other. Is this normal? My front ones are evenly spaced. I am running Tokico springs and Tokico struts.

Yeah, not unusual. They are just dead coils *hypothetically* you could probably cut them off without any adverse effects, however its not hurting anything that way, so I;d just leave 'em :D

Dead coils.. already? They have only been on for 9 months?!

Most springs (infact maybe all) come with "dead coils" at the bottom or top, from brand new. They do not happen over time, they are manufactured that way.

Not dead, they are the first compression springs providing rate to hold up your car. Take your strut out and they will have space. They also provide smooth unload when you yank that wheel in your hands either direction and make that thing turn and the body leans over a bit. So now you unload at say 100 lbs/in not 200 lbs/in. Not all coil have them but variable rates at lower spring rates are prone to it.
