OK, I know there is another thread about the SRT-4 shifter. But Ive been scheming a little something. All hell broke loose in my head after I read that SRT shifter thread.

1. Does the SRT shifter bolt up directly, pull out SXT shifter and throw SRT shifter in?

2. Do you have to replace the bushings when you change the shifter?

3. How does the SRT shift boot mount on everything?

4. Can someone either post or send me detailed pictures of the SRT shifter, without the shift knob and the hole in the shift knob if its possible? Preferably a stock SRT shifter but if a STS looks identical that will work too.

yes, if IIRC

i would get new bushings, not stock though.

i believe the same way. as i dont see how they are different.

The only difference I have been seeing in the boot is that the SXT mounts to the shift knob and the SRT doesnt.

I was thinking new bushings would be a good idea, and for $25 or whatever they cost its not too much money.

Im trying to do this on the ultra cheap (read: being a typical neon owner )

Ill disclose my idea when either: I decide not to do it or it is finished.

i heard that was a direct bolt on. not sure though, might want to read the other thread.

i hear ya on the cheap part as im mostly going for bargain deals.

The overall assembly bolts in perfect, plug and play, but the knob and boot are like night and day. IIRC the shaft diameters between the two are different as well.

Yeah, The SRT shifter Bolts right in to the SXT without a problem, however unlike the SXT boot. which goes up from inside the center console piece, the SRT boot snaps from outside (on top) the center console pience.

Took me about an hour to do, and was my first modification ever.

The SRT4 shifter is a short throw shifter compared to the SXT shifter.

Ummm.... if we're talking Stock SRT vs Stock Neon they're actually the same thing just different rod to accommodate the different style boot and knob. Overall the design is exactly the same. I'm not sure if Mopar still makes it but if you wanted to keep your stock leather knob Mopar does sell a Neon STS which has the spring assembly on it to accept the stock knob. I had it on the black car and is now on the white car. Bad part is, last time I checked the Neon STS was over $200 compared to the SRT STS which is essentially the same thing just different rod and only costs $119 or whatever.

anyone with a set of calipers or a micrometer: will you measure the diameter of the shaft.

if there is a difference, can someone measure the srt shaft and the sxt shaft.

The SRT Shifter does bolt straight up no probs. And as far as that posted picture goes, the stock ones is on the right, the STS on the left.

What about bushings? I know there are different sets for the SRT and the SXT/SE. Is the difference in the SRT set at the trans or the shifter?

The trans. Our Neons have two different sizes for the shifter bushings at the trans where the SRT they're both the same size which are also the same size as the interior bushings as well. I you really wanna get the measurements for the rod size PM Chuck aka Maddog and I'm sure he'll know the answer to that.

diablo, so i have booger bushings on my stock shifter. if i change to a stock SRT shifter or STS, will i need to change the shifter bushings inside the car?
i know that the srt shifter cable bushings are different at the tranny, but are they different inside the car?

i believe in pictures of srt shifters i see a bend in the shaft, is this true.

i have noticed that sxt shifters do not have this bend.

The shifter in my 03 had the bend. I machined a shifter for "03sxt" and his had it too.

latief, you'll be all set. The bushing size on the shifter end is the same SRT vs. SXT. Just be as careful as you can taking the Boogers out because the small ridge on the inside can shear, making them useless.

Ok, so the srt shifter is physically/dimensionally identical to the sxt/se shift with the exception of the knob and the boot.

boy do i sound like a noob. if it is possible to get an answer tonite or tomorrow that would be great. im looking at two srt shifter assemblies, one for $17 and one for $25. they are the cheapest i have found so i want to jump on one of them if possible.

Ive got the SRT shifter in my car now, Direct bolt in!
The SRT shifter does have a slight angle to the shaft, but all in all its a direct bolt on. The Non-SRT shift boot might not fit properly because of the angle in the SRT shaft, I dont remember that much.....
