two questions

Post by latief » Mon Nov 20, 2006 7:14 pm

What is the difference between a hydraulic clutch vs. cable based clutch ? I'm talking performance, and operation? why did they go from cable to hydraulic?

the second question, could you have an engine misfire without generating a CEL?

thanks,

Ease of operation and long-term reliability. If you had a cable-operated clutch in some of these high-horsepower cars with super-strong pressure plates, you'd be laying on that pedal to shift it. The first time I got into a Neon, it threw me off because the clutch was an absolute featherweight compared to what I was used to.

As far as reliability, your slave cylinder can start leaking and you'll see it on the driveway. Still plenty drivable even with a consistant leak if you keep dumping fluid into it (obviously fix it instead). When a clutch cable wears out, you find out when you push your clutch to the floor, hear a loud *thud*, and the pedal stays down because EET BROKE. (Note to self: carry extra clutch cable after installing my ceramic HP clutch)

On these cars, I'm pretty sure the ECU will pick up any kind of misfire on any cylinder and give you a code.

what about a neon with a hydraulic clutch vs a cable clutch, would you notice any significant difference while driving for example smoother/easier operation with the hyraulic vs the cable?

also, will a misfire happen every time the spark takes place, or could it happen on occasion for whatever reason ?

thanks jon. that was very helpful and informative

There is a major difference between a cable clutch and hydraulic when it comes to pedal feel.....
As for the misfire, if its consistant the pcm will start to notice it and if it starts to be constant the pcm will throw a code...

But on an Neon?. Neon clutches are soft to being with because of the conservative amount of power they're built to withstand. I figured that it wouldn't have made a huge difference. At least I didn't notice much difference between a 95 and my 03.

Random misfire is definitely possible for a number of reasons. Could be a bad plug, improperly gapped plug, loose connection on the coil, a loose plug wire, or an older plug wire that's not in the greatest of shape (especially ones that have cracked/ripped/melted insulation... you might get a random arc against the engine itself).

If this is your car that you're talking about, are you getting misfires at low speeds? High speeds? Just random?

i feel that at idle, i have a stutter in the engine every know and then, and recently I'm starting to get a bog-down (if that is the right term!) when i put pressure on it, no codes though, and my plugs are less that 2 months old, so, i think I'm changing my coil (100,000m) on it and my spark-plug wires 2years old, and then go from there, i will also change my plugs just in case i have oil on them or something ....

actually the computer does not pick up everything. i had a misfire situation and i never saw a check engine light. new plugs and wires and it was all gone.

I've seen a lot of missfire on a lot of different cars that haven't even thrown a hint of a CEL.

Hydraulic/Cable clutch = potaatoe/potattoe
