Odd noise in cold start (not piston slap / knock)...

I have noticed, in past two, three months, an odd noise coming from my engine/tranny when starting the car in the morning. (aka cold start)
From what I have noticed is that the sound seems to come from the drivers side and somewhere around tranny/clutch area (it's a -00 5-spd manual)...

Like this morning e.g:
I went outside and the temperature was about -6°F (-22 celsius).
Freezing cold... :D
I don't have engine heater on it because it's a import (no winter-package included) so no help from there.
Anyways, I start the car and it starts ok. After few seconds the sound starts to come from the tranny side. It's constant and reminds like marbles in tin jar...
You know, kinda rumbling sound.
I noticed that when I push the clutch in, it goes away and comes back when I let go off the clutch...
Strange thing is also that the sound goes away completely when engine, and tranny also, gets warmed up.

And clutch seems fine also, no slipping or anything else...
I'm using Redline MTL at the moment and I don't think that's the problem either....
And altough it was freezing today, the sound comes whether it's 32°F or -4°F...

So guys, is this normal for Neons or should I expect clutch renewal in very near future?

I live in Canada (similar climate currently) both my Brother's and My 05 Neons have experienced this problem. When taken to the stealership they mentioned throw-out bearing.

We took both our cars to be diagnosed as they are under warranty. They ended up replacing the complete transaxle on my bro's car, and will soon be doing mine as well.

Its has gotten rid of all sounds like that on my Bro's car now.

I was thinking the same thing, could be your throwout bearing, I had mine replaced almost a year ago, and I havent had noise since..

Mine makes the same sound once it starts getting near freezing. Throw out bearing for sure. If you want to check, just depress the clutch and it should go away. I don't know if it's because the bearing's pooched, or there's too much play/loose somewhere or what. It's been doing it pretty much since I've owned my car, and it never makes any noise except when it's cold like that. This summer I'll have to get in there to change the rear main, so I'll probably throw a new TOB in there while I'm in there.

Thanks for the replays.
It seems to be TOB that is causing the sound...
But since the clutch is working normally, I'm going to wait until it needs to be changed, and then get the TOB fixed at the same time with it.

my situation is identical to matt's.

been doing it since i got it and only does it in the cold. when i press the clutch it goes away, and it also gets better after you drive it for a while.
