i just starting hearing a whining noise when i start up the car and drive it, it doesn't really go away after warming up either...i checked under the hood and it sounds like its coming from the power steering belt or whatever...could my fluid just be low? the car turns the same as it always has?
anyone have a problem like this before?

it could just be the fluid is low.
get the car up to normal operating temp and then check it. ps fluid expands as it gets hot.
let us know what the level is.

that too could be an option.
i said normal operating temp because of the fluid expansion. so you should check it at that temp.

We aren't talking about that god awful wine and screeching noise from a worn belt are we? Have you inspected the belt to make sure it's damaged or needs replacing?

Mine made noise when the fluid was low. Even though it was still in the fill range of the dipstick (although near the bottom) the noise went away when I topped it up to full.
Other thing is to pull the belt, check the condition of that out, and while the belt is off check the shaft of the pump for play. If there's any play it's probabbly pooched. Also spin it by hand, see how much noise it makes then.

I think your looking into the wrong thing.....
Like other's stated before check the obvious....belts...
When the PS pump starts to go bad it growls, not whines....
Whining is normally either the alternator or the tensioner(the one that comes with the engine support)
With sub-zero temps here lately in WNY, my alternator whines for a little bit and goes away. The last time mine whined constantly though it ended up being the tensioner and not the alternator....

I've been having a similar problem lately.
I turn the car on, and any slight turn of the steering wheel causes a loud screeching noise from the belt. The power steering fluid level seems to be fine. It usually goes away after 5 minutes of driving.
Is there anything else that I should check besides the belt?
