Post by lvlistchif » Tue Feb 27, 2007 2:52 pm

what im wondering is how come you can run your oil catch tube and your coolant catch tube towards the ground without anything in between like so \/

like why do u need the coolant and oil to go into a box, cant i have it just run downards like under my oil pan and just drop to the ground? save me the trouble on catch can and coolant bottle

I would say for ENVIRONMENTAL reasons... oil will not degrade and needs to be disposed of properly whilst coolant contains chemicals which are poisonous to animals and could kill them.

I dunno, just me, but at least attempt to care about this planet we live on  ;) <- just razzing you. ;)

but serously, we all need to learn from this and remember that we are stewards of this earth and we need to do something about keeping it clean and ready for the next generation of people and beyond :D

the oil idea wont work. if you use a catch can that is inline with the pcv hose then you will not have a vacuum on the system, thus causing high idle and incorrect pcv system function

also, you do not want to be dropping oil and coolant on to the ground. environmentally its a poor choice. as well as safety. go mix oil or coolant with water and see how slippery it is. now imagine what it would be like to drive over that kind of a mixture. it wont be good.

Frank is 100% right on this one.

For the oil catch can to work properly you need to maintain a vaccuum sealed environment, As well, its just not cool to dump it all over the ground.

In the old days the crankcase was just vented to atmosphere, and on a lot of industrial equipment it still is (although that's changing). Nowadays any sort of emissions inspection will nail you for that and you won't pass until you get the PCV back to stock.

Which coolant line are you looking at "venting." If you vent the one off of the rad going to the coolant reservoir you're going to have issues, such as not enough coolant on cold startup, and the introduction of air into the system. Both are gonna cause you trouble - potentially big trouble in the overheating department. There's already a line on the overflow reservoir that just drains to the ground. Unless you really overfill it you never drain out of there anyways.

So yeah, you could rig it up to share a common vent/drain, but it would be dumb. Not only that but the crankcase vent may even actually back feed into the coolant drain, or vice versa depending on the circumstances.

Overall, this gets a rating of D for dumb.

no need to call someone dumb for asking a honest question

but yea oil wont work without vaccum and if it just drips off then it wont have vaccum....and coolant u want in a tank cus that way if ur car gets hot and it goes in the overflow and when ur car cools down it will take that water back in and if u dont have an overflow then u will have to fill it back up.. the overflow setup works fine ...but for the catch can thats easily modified but u will need to keep it in a tank
IF IT AINT BROKE DONT FIX IT...
