Oil pressure light with no sender installed?

Post by Ryanm07 » Tue Apr 03, 2007 12:51 am

Ok so i've been running my car since like july with an aftermarket oil pressure gauge, which I replaced for my stock sender. Now today 3 times, at almost random my oil light (the little can tilted with a drop comming out) popped up. Now I dont see how this light would pop on and off without the sender plugged in. I figured on, or off, one or the other. I put my vent in the back of my valve cover into a catch can the other day instead of just vented through a filter. again though, I dont see what that would have to do with it when I have no sender in to begin with. Any reasons why that light would come on? Is there another sensor that controls that light? Is it safe to drive my car? lol thanks guys, as if I didnt have enough problems lately.

what does your gauge read? If its between 4psi to 80 psi, then you should be fine. The oil light comes on when your dangerously low on oil. Minimum of 4 psi is required. Just go by what your gauge reads.

yeah it reads about 15 at the absolute lowest at idle. its weird because twice it did it around turns. lol the other time i was going straight on a flat road so i think it was just a coincidence. its also weird that its been fine this whole time. My oil light is the one thing I go NUTS about even though I knew it wasnt hooked up I freaked lol. Has anyone else had this happen? btw 60trim thanks for the quick reply at least I know my car will be ok to drive.

the light is comming on because you are using a totally different sending unit. the stock sending unit is an off/on unit... meaning either it sends a signal or not. the aftermarket (gauge type) plays with the strength of the signal sent and therefore the gauge knows to read throughout the range.

yeah its not hooked up to the stock connector though. Like the connector for the stock sensor is just dangling there not connected to anything. The sender thats in there is just connected to my aftermarket gauge. thats why i just think its weird that i've gone all this time without the light comming on, then today out of nowhere it goes on and off at 3 completely random times.

If the stock wires are just dangling, depending on how the stock system is wired if the two wires aren't randomly touching then one is randomly hitting something metallic and causing the light to come one.

Properly tie back and secure the wires.

no problem. Your fine. check your oil regularly also. Just because the gauge reads that your have a good oil pressure, you could still be a little low. Oil burns off naturally so check it regularly. Fix the wires also and you should be okay.
