I filled up, drove and recoreded my miles, then filled up again and divided it out to get my gas millage. I am only getting 21.67MPG!
This time when i drove i drove my car as easy as i could and never let it go past 3k RPM's. What is wrong with my car? Should i take it in to get it looked at?

if it really bothers you then go ahead. me i really wouldn't care as long as it ran and didn't srcew with the performance.

are you on the highway mostly for the driving ... or is that in and around town where you are sitting at stop lights and waiting on traffic a lot? ...

also use drivethroughs often? ...

things like that can make the milage on an otherwise good car seem bad ...

fill it up and hit the higway .. drive till you are almost out of gas .. then check it again ...

on my 01 i average between 280 to 340 miles per tank depending on driving.

it is mostly city driving but i dont go through drive throughs at all. The whole reason i decided to a neon is because of the gas milage that i thought i would be getting (28-32mpg)

you will not get 28-32mpg in any car in the city, unless its a hybrid.

take that out on the highway for a good trip and i guarantee you will get >28mpg, probably closer to 33 or 34mpg.

21mpg is perfectly acceptable and the dealer will probably laugh at you when you complain about it. if you look at the window sticker it gives a range of what should be expected for both city and highway driving. 21mpg is in that range.

heh ... just noticed it is an auto as well ... prob with the silencer in the fender ...

you are getting about the right milage for what you have ... not going to find many that will get better then that for around town / traffic driving (considered harsh driving)

also gas mileage goes down when the car isnt brought up to operating temp for any length of time.

so if you dont drive far, less than 5 or 10 mile trips then you can expect low fuel economy.

short trips and cold weather = bad fuel economy

yeah i have asked this before...but the gas millage went bad again...

also running a/c and defroster cuts down on gas millage.

im getting pretty bad mileage too!! would my 36lb injectors rrfpr and my 10psi of boost running my afr around 10.5:1, flooring it at every stoplight and WOT runs on the highway have anything to do with it?

I used to get about 25 mpg out of my 00 neon but that was in the summer and going 10 miles to work and back and sometimes going on a decent drive. I think that car maxed out at like 32-34 mpg on a highway drive.

When the weather gets better the gas milage will get better.

I'm getting excellent mileage with my 05. Mine is a MTX. Lately, I've been consistently getting 27-29 MPG. That's city driving, with about a 20% stretch of 75 MPH freeway jaunt. My (MPG) mods are Iceman CAI, Magnaflow muffler, and Pennzoil Platinum synthetic.

It's not rev's so much that hurts milage as much as it's throttle. I let my engine rev out, but I'm light on the throttle. For this time of year I only get about 24 ish mpg all city. In the summer I was getting regular 30's for all city driving, would rev it past 3k most of the time.

Highway milage is much better.

The trick is utilizing the power band to keep the engine in it's more efficient operating areas as opposed to just keeping the rev's low. For example, when I'm heavily loaded and climbing through the hills I get much better milage dropping it into third at 60MPH than trying to climb the hill 4th with more throttle.

For an MTX, Natural Resources Canada lists a 00 MTX at 34 (28us)city and 46(38us)highway MPG. An auto was rated at 30(25us)city and 40(33us)highway MPG. The neon maintianed it's rating at about those values for it's production life.

If he's got an auto, and it's the winter, and worse the tires aren't kept up then yes 21 is probably acceptable for that car running at this time of year (I'm also running about 3-4mpg under and I'm in tip top shape).

But don't say it's not possible to get 30mpg in the city with any car because it's very doable.

I checked mine yesterday and got 32mpg with a mix of city and highway driving having a MTX helps. Try changing plugs wires and air filter or recharge your K&N if you have one. I'm also running 5W-30 Mobil1 oil.

well, I have to make a first post somewhere, so here it goes...

I get around 22 in the city and right at 30-31 highway in my 03 atx, its decent I guess, and at 2.70/gal I'm glad I still have my neon....maybe this is why the dealership keeps calling wanting to buy back my car.

I get anywhere from 22-32 mpg, depending on how I drive. I drove from KC, Mo to Key West, Fl in June/July over a two week period and I got 33 mpg (avg) on that trip - yes, I saved every receipt and calculated all gas milage. I was very happy with my milage. During the weekend my milage drops significantly because I deliver pizzas in the city, which sucks, but I found out that turning off my car in between deliveries does not help. I get better milage if I keep my car running inbewteen deliveries as long as it is not over a few minutes I spend inside waiting.

21 mpg does suck, but look closely at how you drive, you probably are into the gas pedal a lot more than you think - fast acceleration means a lot of open throttle meaning uses more gas... watch your habits, and where you drive and for how long.

yeah, it is a bit weird...and up to 90% of blue book! or so they say...either way I would get like 50% cuz im sure the "small" blemish of letting my gf (ex now) drive my car a few years ago, taking a 90 degree turn at 45 into a neighboorhood and putting it into the curb...i was so thankfull her dad was a mechanic in the past and had the money to fix it all in about 3 hours, minus the paint which i messed up anyways haha

It's not, a mile is a mile. An IMP gallon is 4.546092 L, a US gallon is 3.785412 L.

No he is, IMO he was being a dick about it, at least that's how it came across to me when I read it. You don't need no hybrid or diesel anything to get good city milage. I'm not saying you'll get that in stop and go gridlock, but it's VERY realistic to get that kind of milage in a LOT of small cars in the city if you drive accordingly.
