Here's another thing I noticed on my new purchase. I've never noticed this before on my other neons. I'm assuming this is the cam gear - are you supposed to see it?

yes thats the timing gear and belt .. from the looks of the covering .. something from the outside ground away at it ... not sure exactly what would do that ...

no not supposed to be able to see it.
i have to agree with -Devil- that it was from the outside in because of the angles. that is very strange.

(again, thanks devil)
Is this something that I should try to fix? Is it going to be a problem do you think?

if everything is secured so that nothing can come in contact with the timing belt then i dont see a problem with it ... it is possible that the motor was apart at one time and someone hit that with a grinder .. or i tmight have gotten damaged and they cut it off a bit ...

to me it looks like someone wanted to take a look at the timing belt and was too lazy to do it the right way...so they grinded some of the cover away...but thats my opinion

Wow, dunno, but that is deffinately done from the outside.
Also, you have a lot of old oil on your valve cover around your oil cap. Clean it up and see if your cap is leaking oil out.

Id agree w/ KBOB....it looks like someone took a dremel toll to it. Id wonder about all the plastic bits that stayed in there.......
