so when im drivin my 02 sxt hard...all my shift points are at 5600...i did some researh and i think thats where they make horsepower...but i just wanted to know where everyone else shifts at???

just shy of 6500

ive took it that far a few times....it does have much pull anymore after like 5800

it may not have as much pull, but if you shift too soon and drop the rpm's to low then you will lose time as the engine trys to get back into power.
i ran 16.11 (stock w/a K&N) shifting like i do, so i know im not going to change it.

I shift about 6.5k... it drops the needle right back at the beginning of the power band

You need to get your car on a dyno and find out where your peaks are. My shift is @ 5300....my tq peak is 4500....I shift over the peak so im dropping almost on the peak. You can shift where you want....but again untill its dynoed youll be guessing

Max performacne shift points in the manual (for mag cars anyway) is right about 6500. Go to 30 in 1st that is where it is.

Is that a performance or a save my gas shifting??

That is a blanket statement for a stock setup. When one adds intake and/or exhaust mods those points can change, sometimes dasticly.

yeah, there was another recent topic on this, I shift at higher RPMs cause I have the CAI, and exhaust. However, not everyone can get a dyno, so the only thing most people can offer is just blanket statements to give an idea where the car's power seems to thin out.

i shift when i feel like it. Depends on how i want my exhaust to sound at that moment in time.

/shrugs ... after years of beating the hell out of the car and driving it all over the place .. thats about the best place for me to shift .. for the overall quickest accel from a stoplight .. but at the same time not attract attention of the cops .. or burn some of that 3$ per gallon gas off to quickly ...
redlining between stop lights (some a 1/2 mile apart) i only would see about a second difference in time it would seem to get there .. so why bother loosin more fuel.

especially with no cat the popo don't like loud exhausts in CT.
when i want to really push/have fun it i shift at 6500

I can ALMOST say with certainty that the originator of the topic is specifically asking in regards to power when racing etc...
In this case, I shift at redline, or right below it (6700) and I usually drop right around to 4900 or so, and it brings right into my power band of 5k-6750 rpms. In a magnum pwoered car, the engine makes its best power in that range.

mine is just odd i guess ... seems to start making power around 2k ... then dies off a little before 4.5k ... maybe 5k at the most ...

Where do I shift? I shift from the drivers seat...............
6850rpm

seems to put it in the sweet spot for tq. my modded 03 needed to be shifted about 6500 to hit the sweet spot in the tq curve after shifting

I understand what your saying...but again that is a blanket statement. It all comes down to what exactly you have done as mods

The reg 2.0 makes peak hp at 5600 rpm, and peak tq at 4600. It would make sense to shift at a point where the following gear will put you right back in the tq/hp range (depending on what kind of driving youre doing). I shift early when carving canyons (6000 max) that way im in the tq curve for climbing hills and for constant on-off accel. The neon has solid mid range power (more so with a intake and open exhaust, it seems) so for any road racing type situations, an early shift is best IMO. For drag racing, most prefer redline. I cant say im very impressed with the power after 5800; it seems to drop off rather quickly. Ive shifted at 6500 and even a hair beyond (redline is 6725 if I remember correctly), and its not nearly as effective as shifting a bit earlier.
Does anyone know exactly where the rev limiter is on the standard 2.0? I would assume 6725, but ive never bounced off of it, not even on accident, and I beat the hell out of this car pretty often. I suppose the lack of power (especially in that range) makes it pretty easy to keep track of the tach.

I think the rev limiter cuts in at 7200rpm... redline starts at 6500. (I hit it once on purpose, but a long time ago, and then another time on accident when trying to get on the freeway behind someone merging at 20mph into 70mph traffic... yeah they do that here in Reno...)

im pretty sure its about 6700, ive seen my tach needle go slightly above 6500 when i bouced off it before.

6750 for standard, 6850 for magnum. A few select ACR's got an even higher revlimiter for SCCA use, IIRC.

No way, I have never hit above 6750, the rev limiter on our neon is just that. The higher rev limit you are talking about was of course the ACR only, for SCCA I think it was called "grassroots" or something.
Neons.org 2gn FAQ wrote:As listed in the table for each engine, the SOHC rev limiter steps in at 6750 rpm. Both manual and automatic transmission cars are subject to this governor.

I thought the magnums were 100 rpm higher, but I gusse I might be wrong. I'll have to look into that more.
Allpar says....
6750 rpm manual trans
6720 automatic trans

I could have sworn ive pushed it past 6700 at least a couple of times. Its probably safe to rev the car until it hits the limiter as a test, wouldnt you guys say? I doubt anything would really let go until about 7000+. I kinda wanna see what its like bouncing off the limiter, but i dont wanna risk any damage

Kinda a stupid question, but will our Neons bounce off the limiter? I've always wondered, but too afraid to do it.

^any car that has a limiter should be able to 'bounce' off of it. Its just a quick fuel cut (usually). Im sure its safe to hit it, but id rather ask and see what other peoples experiences have been first. Its there to prevent the motor from over revving, so it should be set well before that would normally happen. Its probably a bad idea to try it on a motor with a lot of miles, since it will be more likely to fail under that kind of strain.

there was one time i bounced off the limiter going through the traps in third gear. pegged the limiter right as a crossed the finish line.
(i had short slicks on)

its better to hit the rev limiter under a load then free rev!motors dont like it!! but if your racing thats time your losing letting it tach out!! but yes it will bounce.
