Steering rack question

Hi
How would i know if my steering rack is going.
I had my neon at the dealer for a service and the technician said that there is about 20 000 km left before i have to change it. Its going to cost me an arm and a leg!

leaks....soggy fluid filled bellows boots.....missing bellows boots.....misc leaks in the rack itself

There is no leaks that i can see. U think they're ripping me off?

It could be leaking or making noise and possibly rough to turn.
Now if none of those are present then how the F'n piss can they know how long it will last.

I'm no technician but i don't feel ,see, smell or hear any of that simptoms. There is a cracking type sound when there is some body roll ( like when i turn up into my driveway) but when im on a level surface and i turn the wheel there nothing. I think i should go and get a 2nd opinion from another dealership.
