Question for peeps that have done the 1st Gen Throttle Plate

Hey All,
For the past couple weeks I have been trying to do this mod, and twice now I've hit a snag.
I picked up the throttle plate from a 1st Gen ATX Neon to put into my car. Got home, pulled my tbody out, switched plates, and found that the plate I picked up was very loose inside the shaft. Puzzled and frustrated I put everything back together. Went out to the junkyard again today, pulled out another t-plate, and it's the same size as the first one. What gives, I thought this was a direct swap kinda deal ? Anyone else had this kind of experience ?
The 2 plates put together are almost the same thickness as the old one, so I'm considering putting them together and running it that way.
I'm sure if I did the half-shaft mod it would be easier to run just one of them, but I'm afriad to cut the shaft and break something without having a back up tbody.
Thanks!
Kevin

I never tried it without doing the half-shaft mod, so I don't know how it would fit inside the normal shaft. Those throttle shafts are very strong, and able to hold up pretty well. That said, you can still mess them up, but it's difficult, and it's not gonna break once it's in the car.
Another tip: when you put the plate in, don't tighten the screws all the way. Then snap the blade back a couple times so it seats itself perfectly. Then tighten the screws all the way.
Or you could do both plates together. I doubt it'd hurt, but it probably wouldn't be that good for airflow. Couldn't be any worse than the stocker though.
Better yet, if you're feeling adventurous, you could try to find an adapter plate for a mustang throttle body and do it blackrose style.
I like it. Alot.

I was sticking to doing just the throttle plate mod because I like my fuel mileage
I may just try doing both together because I can polish the metal to make it smoother then the plastic, and it will eliminate the butterfly which I assume will help regardless.

With driving habits the same, I get better MPG with the mustang TB than I did with the stocker. Of course you will lose mpg if you play around while using the mustang TB but not anything close to the stocker. The mustang TB yet slightly difficult to install, was better overall than the stocker...

Oh, I wasn't aware of that. Perhaps I will try to start getting the parts for that then.

Right, and I thought from the post on here that the ATX one was the one that will work. It actually fits fine except for the fact that it's not thick enough.
Thanks!

the first gen throttle plates are the same size ATX/MTX.
The difference in throttle body size comes from the fact that the throttly body narrows down to smaller than the throttle plate size on an MTX throttle body.
And I agree. I get better gas mileage with the mustang TB. Or, I should say, I get about the same gas mileage and I drive it ALOT harder. Should say something.

Since I already had one 1st Gen throttle plate, I decided to go ahead and give this mod another try. I went to the junk yard and got another throttle plate, and tried them stacked on top of each other. No dice, too thick.
Just for giggles I pulled out my friends digital calipers. The 2gn throttle plate measures .100 of an inch and at the butterfly's largest point .285 of an inch!. The 1gn measures .060 of an inch, so 2 of them stacked together would make it .120 of an inch, in other words, too thick.
I ended up just doing the half shaft mod, so the 1gn plate will fit. Everything seems fine thus far, but I haven't driven the car much yet. So for anyone else considering this mod you have to do the half shaft mod for it to work. I will likely also put a post in the half shaft how-to with my findings so the info is out there.
Thanks for everyone's help. Now to start hunting for a 5.0 TB =)
