Car security alert!

Post by Jamie » Fri Aug 17, 2007 2:28 pm

I learned a new way to break into our cars two nights ago the hard way. It may have been covered before but this is worth mentioning again.

at about 2 in the morning on Tuesday morning my key chain that is the receiver for my two way alarm beeped four times saying that the warn away on my alarm had been activated. at first i thought someone just backed into me because it has happened twice in Philly :cussing: so i laid there for a minute. anyway after thinking about it for a few seconds i decided to go check on it. when i walked out of my apartment that is on the third floor i saw two kids, wont say race or age but they were attempting to hide behind a tree and another car.

when i saw them i tried to hit the panic button on the alarm but i didn't hold it long enough and it just chirped. when it chirped the kids ran off. i was only wearing a pair of shorts, no shoes or shirt so i did not chase them

anyway on to the meat. I called the police and they came out but more importantly...

My alarm has a very bright LED in the top of the dash. what shit head #1 and #2 did was to reach through the grill of my 2000 and grab a hold of the hood latch cable. if you yank on it you can pull the outside of the cable free from the hood latch mechanism. then all you have to do is pull on the cable a bit more and the hood will pop. It wasn't until the hood popped when the alarm felt the shock and started the warn away. all good alarms should also come with a hood pin that will activate the alarm in full alert when the hood is popped.

what a friend of mine from my old pd i used to work for said was that they do that now to open the hood, remove the battery cable, and deactivate the alarm. so with the alarm deactivated they can do just about anything to the car as long as the battery stays unhooked. most alarms will alert when the battery is hooked back up.

so for those with the open style grills like the early 2000's like mine keep a check on that cable. and if there is anyway you can make it to where it cant be ripped on by all means do it. also when looking at car alarms always look for one with 1. a hood pin that activates when the hood is opened. 2. glass break sensor. 3. shock sensor. 4. starter kill 5. and maybe the most overlooked... a backup battery for the alarm. what this will do is if the battery is pulled off and they break a window or open a door... the alarm will still activate.

ok guy I hope you all can use this information to keep all of our cars and hard work safe!

good luck tuning

Yeah i knew about that, another fix is to relocate your battery or get a second battery and install that in the trunk running it from the alt. glad they didnt get anything tho.

my siren activates if the power drops or is cut. it keeps going until power is restored or until its battery dies 3 hours later. It is 120dB siren :). I also have a hidden 160dB piezo installed inside the car. It is hidden so good i don't even know where it is at.

its very easy to break into the engine bay on a neon. A good friend of mine had quite a few things ripped off after theives just used a reciprocating saw on his hood latch. It's especially easy to get to if you have a stock 00-02 front bumper.

The stock security system on my car has a hood sensor that even if you cut the latch, the alarm would still go off when you raise the hood. I've looked at it pretty good, and I don't see how you could raise the hood at ALL without that sensor setting off the alarm. I've set it off myself a few times: Park the car, shut it off, pop the hood from inside...then get out and lock it with the fob because I'm done in the cabin. Then I go raise the hood that's been popped and ding a ling a ling....scared the crap out of me the first time I did it.

Yeah I knew about getting under the hood that way too...

....on ebay I found a electric hood lock for sale, got it for $30 bucks, plan on installing it one of these days.

Also bought a two way alarm with a back up battery powered siren.

^ I bought the hood lock for protection from someone disconnecting the battery, now that I think of it, a back up battery for the alarm would have just been easier.
