Fog Light wiring experts ...

Post by latief » Sun Sep 09, 2007 8:24 pm

Got some OEM fog lights for my 2000, i also got a MFS with the fog light option. installed everything, and of course nothing worked

i was under the impression the base 2000s and only 2000s come with wiring in place for the fogs. i have the grey connector near the radiator so i assumed that should be it. after messing with it today, i guess i am missing a wiring harness from that plug to the lights themselves....

also, i looked at my fuse box, under fuse 19 (for fogs) , there is nothing in there...meaning just an opening, but not a real socket....

so what will it take to get these damn fogs to work? :banghead:

i am a newbie on wiring, some help will be appreicated....i want to use the MFS i bought.......

thanks

I'll be doing this soon, I got some extra money and time off now. I'm gonna try to get a wiring manual from a guy I know at the dealer. *crosses fingers*

Shouldn't be too much trouble if you want to keep it looking factory, just have to find the missing wire. I looked in my fuse box and only the ground is in the place where the fog fuse should be. Just need to take a wire out of a junk car to put in then run the wire to where it needs to go. Then go to a junkyard and get a harness, or 2 to make one if you have to.

I'm not sure whats missing, I'm taking a guess that its just a wire or two that go to the plug for the fogs. I have the same situation though, the PCM says that they're on via cluster so it must be just a missing wire.

Notice fuse 19 location (sorry for the lousy picture). it is supposed to be teh fog light fuse, but there is no way you could attach any fuse to the that thing becasue there is nothing but plastic in there (no metal connectors)

also, this is the only loose plug under the front bumper. i was assuming that there was another one for the other fog, but i guess i was mistaken. you definetly need a conncetor from the connector to the foglights ......

that is the correct plug, right?

so what do i need to do to get these things to work ?

on 2000-2002 all neons came with the harness plug for the fog lights. when you add fogs to a car that didnt have fogs you will need the fog lights and fog light harness. the fog light harness plugs into the harness plug under the car. the fog light harness has 2 plugs, one for each fog light, that is wired to a single plug that gets pluged into the harness plug under the car.

I'm not sure what else needs to be done, but i hope this helps.

on 2003 and up neons, the fog light harness are hard wired to the complete engine harness.

Try the local dealer and see if they'll let you rent/barrow a factory service manual.

Um I dunno if you realised this, but the switch for the fogs on cars that came with them is actually part of the turnsignal stalk. When you turn the knob to turn on the headlights, you pull it outward at the end to turn on the fogs.

If I were you, I'd just go to a junkyard, cut off the bulb ends with a foot or so of wire, and wire them up with a simple switch. You could get your wire kit by buying a $20 set of generic foglights from Big Lots or Wal-Mart. They usually come with decent wiring instructions. Just use the wiring on your junkyard cut bulb ends, and mount your OEM fog housings.
Drive it like you stole it, and work on it like you married it.
