High output alternator question.

Post by deep1ca » Sat Sep 22, 2007 1:38 am

So im gonna be changing the alternator in my car to stop lights dimming and amp clipping along with getting a better amp.

How many amps is the stock alternator?
What sort of options do I have?

I read somewhere about the pt cruiser alternator being high output and being straight bolt on?

Stock Neon 85amps
PT Cruiser 100+

Yes its a direct swap. While you're at it you might as well upgrade your grounds.

wont that mess up the battery making it over charge, or blow fuses..

sounds like you might need capasitors for your amp to fix your dimming probleme. and getting a new battery thats built for high out put like a oddessy bat.

I would upgrade your grounds first aka do the big 3.
I would then get a optima yellowtop or a kinetik battery.

Then do the alternator, doing all that first is like prepping your car for a new output alt & would help lessen the dimming & you might not even need a new alt.

I currently run 2 compressors pullin about 17 amps a piece...SOOO..
I run a optima yellow top battery, 4awg grounds throughout, and a pt cruiser alt. I cant remember what year i got but basically i check the web and found the year pt that had the highest amp alternator...it ended up being 130 amps...
SOO i have 130 amp pt alt bolted right up and install wasnt half that bad...ill look at the box tomarro and get a part number for ya

wow i think im going to look into a pt alt if someone can throw out the year or part num we need for the exchange.

wouldnt the high output damage the battery or over charge it..

anybody thats done this swap notice any change in idle or overal performance.

no a higher output alternator shouldn't over charge a battery, it has a voltage regulator.
