I got my neon in august, when i got it cleaned the door jams and removed alot of the grease that was around the hinges, i don't even remember what I cleaned them down with, it might have been windex or something.

Anyways, I noticed today that some rust is starting to appear on a few of my hinges, is this because I removed too much of the grease that was on them?

What should I do? Grease them up again?

Hinges should never be left dry, use some white lithium spray grease or some other type of grease to lube them back up.

Excessive lubrication around the hinges is just messy and serves no real purpose... other than perhaps a rust inhibitor. I cleaned up my door jams earlier in the summer then lubed the hinges & latches.

Door and hood hinges should be lubed with engine oil where the latch mechanisms can be lubed with grease. The oil can actually penetrate into the workings of the hinge where the grease will pretty much sit on the surface.

You can also wipe down the door weather stripping with a silicone spray. This cleans them up somewhat making them blacker and reduces rubbing motion against the stripping.

If it is available at your local hardware get some LPS 3 It is pricey. Oil your hinges with your favorite oil then spray the lps. It goes on like oil but sets like cosmoline. It will help seal in the oil and it also is a good rust inhibitor. When you want to relube just clean it off with penetrating oil and repeat. I sprayed the interior of the liftgate on my Cherokee when I had the inside cover off years ago and to this day there is 0 rust 8 years later ( on the liftgate) just wish I had tore the rest of the interior out and did the whole body.
