Teflon tape with Oil drain plug

Post by latief » Wed Nov 07, 2007 12:08 pm

Can Teflon tape be used to stop a leaky oil drain plug? I changed mine a while back to an oversized one, still leaks a bit

Thanks

It's worth a shot, but oversize drain plugs aren't my favorite way to go.

If there is a yard in your area, maybe go and pull a pan. As long as the threads are good in that pan, then you will be set. Shouldn't cost too much.

You can, just make sure you use the Yellow tape.

Is the yellow stuff oil resistant?

I never knew about a yellow teflon tape, only white.

The only concern that came to my mind was, will it hold up to the heat?

Definitly, I looked at McMaster-Carr and the first few tapes I saw were rated at 400* and 500*F

Yellow teflon tape must be elusive, because a lot of people don't even believe in its existence. A couple years back I had to run all over to even find it and asking employees at quite a few auto parts stores led to blank stares and them telling me there is only white.

Lucky I was able to find and prove to myself it does, in fact, exist. Now to do the same with 'ole Nessy and Bigfoot so we can put an end to half of the crappy shows on cable...

Yup, yellow is the good stuff. I've got it on various fittings on my Neon and my Daytona.

As far as the heat, your oil pan stays relatively cool almost all the time. It's aluminum, so it dissipates heat easily.

Yeah, I'm with Jon on that one. I remember I had driven a lot one day and I was under the car and accidentally brushed my arm against the oil pan and instantly thought I was going to be doomed, but realized it wasn't near as hot as what I expected it to be.

White teflon tape = water resistant
Yellow teflon tape = petroleum based product resistance
