I Smell Gas
I Smell Gas
Well every now and then, usually when it's really cold I smell gas coming from my vents with the heat on. Only when the recirc is off though. So I know it's coming from my engine bay, not leaks anywhere, Also smell it when I refuel, but thats sort of obvious since I fill it up until it comes out on my shoes. Any suggestions?

Could be your vapor cannister is cracked, or there is a bad line from it to the purge solenoid. I think the vapor cannister is in the front passenger side bumper/fender area and the purge solenoid is below the Vacuum booster.< (brakes) not 100% positive...
Edit: there should be a vacuum schematic somewhere under the hood with that info.

Probably shouldn't listen to anything your penis says, that guy's a dick.

Pfft.. under the right conditions anything is possible. Get fuel hot enough, that flash point will bite you in the ass.

I smell gas whenever I take a hard turn in my car (such as the twisties in the mountains) IF I have a full tank. Never when the tank is under 3/4.
Someone suggested to me that I may have a hole in the top of the tank, and hard turning/cornering spashes gas out the hole.
Are these tanks plastic or metal?

The tank in plastic. There are several holes w/ check valves on the top of the tank for ventilation and vapor recovery purposes. It is conceivable that one of the check valves may be leaking or otherwise not functioning properly.Arro wrote: Are these tanks plastic or metal?
The vapor canister is right behind the fuel tank on the left side of the car. If there were any problems with the charcoal canister or any vacuum leaks anywere in the evap purge system you usually get a CEL code pretty quickly. If you're not getting a CEL the evap system is probably fine...

How would I go about checking these check valves? Would I need to drop the tank?

Thanks for clearing that up, I'd be worried if I smelt coal from my vents.turbodudey wrote:Andy, " I smell gas."

Opie, "I smell gas too."
Gomer, "Yeah, me too."
Barney, "Alright, alright! You smell gas! Of course you smell gas! What do you think this thing runs on, coal?!"
Douchebag...
j/k
Is that from something?
So don't be worried as long as I don't have a cel? I'll probably tear into it tomorrow if I wake up at a decent time (B-day I turn 19 and I got the day off) So check the evap system and vaccum system

Yeah. That's from an episode of the Andy Griffith Show when Barney gets a new car. I just thought of that because everyone was saying how they smell gas and whatnot. I thought it was kind of funny. Anyway... moving on.aperson wrote:Thanks for clearing that up, I'd be worried if I smelt coal from my vents.turbodudey wrote:Andy, " I smell gas."

It won't hurt to check the vacuum lines and stuff, but if your not getting a CEL then most likely it's not the evap system. The only other thing that I can think of is to check the schrader valve on the end of the fuel rail to make sure it hasn't gone AWOL. Either that or the push-on plastic clips that hold the fuel line on the rail...
