High Performance Tires

When i went on tirerack.com i couldnt find any tires in the STOCK SIZE for a neon that were "high performance". I did find some 440 A A General Altimax tires but they were only speed rated 84T.

I want something rated at least a 'U' or an 'H' since i've read reports that the 2002 Neon SXT can reach top speeds of 124mph....i want tires that can go at least as fast as the car.

Can someone help me out here? And yes hopefully they can be all season tires...if not...that's ok too.

2gn Neons top out at 118 mph unless its a magnum engine, and then 133mph is the top speed. The engine limits it there, because this is the fastest speed thats safe for the stock tires. So anything rated higher then a T rated tire, is going to technically be a performance tire for you, compared to stock that is. no point in going to hardcore, remember its all about corner's, not just how fast you can go in a strait line.

Don't they have the chip set at 110 mph for top speed? Unless you've taken out the speed limit you won't go any faster then that. That being said, why would you want stock size? Stock heigth I can understand but it's always better to go wider if you can. Put the widest tire on that the rim will take, reduce the sidewall to keep the overall heigth the same.

looks like you have the speed codes figured out. General rule of thumb is the lower the wear rating (380 vs. 440 for example), the generally stickier the tire. I'm running 195/60/15's (up until recently, I thought that was the stock size!), on stock 7spoke 2gn wheels with no issues and fairly decent handling. Check that size as opposed to 185 and see if there's more "performance" options available.

Not all manufacturers use the same measurement though it seems, so take any of the specs as horshoes&handgrenades type of ballpark figure especially with cold traction tires and ratings.

If you are actually going to track your car (AutoX, strip or some HPDE lub), I highly highly recommend you get a set of tires specifically for those events if you plan on doing it on a regular basis.

Wow thanks alot for the advice. I dont plan on tracking it...the reason i wanted performance tires is in case i go out on 495 late night...and decide to go the cars top speed. Lol...i could be to richmond in one hour haha.(its about 128 miles away)

Yep, I saw on a FAQ where speed limiter is set at 118 mph. My bad, live and learn. That's why I'm on the site, so I can learn.

Please send me a pm when you plan on doing this, so I can stay off the roads.

I'm sorry but that is just dumb.

And I'm with Wayne, shoot me a PM too so I know when you do that. I will make sure I am at home.

I'm just glad you don't have an SRT.

My R/T has no speed limiter.

iono one day at 1 or 2am....when nobody is outside and its safest for me. My aunt says everyone should take their car to its top level since that's what they paid for. I agree....

Speaking of tires tho...somehow my neon has P205/60-S15's

Ah yes....once again i am happy i never tried to max out when i first got the car...my tires would have exploded.

I remember, it was my '04 Ram that had the 110 mph speed limiter. It's going to take a few weeks to get that truck out of my mind.

Yeah, stock size is 185/60/15.

Doesn't matter what you think of it, its still dumb. I don't want to be on the road when you do something as stupid as double the speed limit on a state highway.

My Aunt says you shouldn't drink dairy while eating meat and that pork is dirty, do I think that is the way to go... No.

My last two sets of tires have been 88H. First set were Uniroyal TigerPaw Touring HR's, and the current set are Nokian Hakka WR's.

I didn't realize H rated tires were a big deal.

I picked up some TRZs. Very happy with the performance, I looked at the T rating, 118MPH (190KPH) and laughed.. I would never take it close to that.. If I was tracking it, or something of the kind, I probably wouldn't be running stock anything.

I'm with Frank/Wayne on this, and I'm glad I'm up above the border.

I LOVE my avid TRZ's. For the money they are the best tire. I know I will be buying another set when it comes time for a new set of tires.

I'm gonna put about 75000 - 80000 miles on these things, almost triple of what I had on the OEM eagle ls's when they were dead.

Snow traction is great, wet traction is great and dry traction is great (for a non-performance oriented tire). The only different in the future is that these will be my winter tires and I will have performance oriented tires for the summer.

You know, I've had the stock goodyear 175/70-14s over 150mph and they didn't blow. Not saying it's a good idea, but those speed ratings are more of a guideline than a strict rule anyway. It's all there to take away the responsibility of your stupidity from the tire manufacturer.

well not everyone has money to go on a track. How do u think alot of ppl test their cars? The Interstates are quite empty at nite...even certain state routes like 301 South thru charles county. There are so many ppl who break 100 everyday when ur driving and u dont crash into them. Do u skid to the side of the road when they're behind u lol?

Doesn't change the fact that it's dumb.

If they're behind me, then the road wasn't really empty.

So, if something breaks (tie rod, LCA bolt, Ball joint, etc...) where do you end up on these deserted roads? a ditch, a field or a headline?. I never said people don't do it, just that I would never condone it, nor do I appreciate hearing it outside my house. (they tear down the road by my house @ ~ 11:00pm.) It is foolish and reckless (and here, if you are caught @ 50km over, it's an impound lot for your car for 7 days, your license is suspended for the same, you face a huge fine (read, over 1g) and you score 7 points, so any other infraction and your in explaining why you should be allowed to drive)...

If you can't afford to take it to the track, then don't take it out. Have you ever gone around a bend with a car going 70-80MPH slower then you in front. I'm afraid there isn't much time to do anything (except swerve and hope for the best).

They are really good. I was impressed when I hit the puddle at the side of a road doing 80kph, didn't pull the wheel at all (I only had 3 fingers on it) and wasn't hydroplaning.. but up here, the 4 ran me close to 600$ installed.. I think down there they are 60$ a piece.. way better then the ones that were on it. (100kph was a horrible vibration). Still glad I waited for them to come in, and will definitely recommend them to others :)

Yeah, it is definitely a lot cheaper here. I paid $53/tire, then $50ish to ship them and $50ish to have them mounted and balanced on the wheel. So about $320 total iirc.

It helps to have a lift and another vehicle. I took my wheels and new tires to a guy while my car was on the lift.
