as far as i know, chains are for rear wheel drive cars... at least i only know that because police cars here have them....... you may be able to get them on your rear wheels, but then i also think they might be illegal... seriously, you need snow anything in CA? heh

Snow tires will get you through the winter.

If the conditions are so bad that chains are required in addition to snow tires then it is time to stay at home or find a safe spot to pull over and wait it out.

If they are legal in your area... you may want to look into studded winter tires.

If it's bad enough for snow chains leave the Neon at home. Or you could flip it on it's top and use it as a tobogon.
But seriously some good snow and ice rated tires will do the job as long as the snow isn't deeper than your ground clearance. That's one problem with fwd, the snow lifts the tires off the ground and you have to shovel it out from under to get backed up and moving again. Don't ask me how I know.

seriously, you need snow anything in CA? Mountains/Northern CA

SoCal is for pussies! j/k kidding. Personally, I don't think I could handle the summer heat.

Neons are not able to use chains on the front tires because if one were to break it would tear up stuff. That pretty much leaves snow tires, studded tires, or something like the spike spiders (which btw are really cool).

^ if one were to break on any vehicle it would tear shit up. We had one come off on our work truck and it tore up the brake line.

But snow chains aren't for everyday driving, they are ment to be kept in the trunk, and if you are hit with bad conditions in hilly terrain, then you get out and put them on to get through it. Then take em off when you are clear.

So, depending on your roads in the winter, whether the roads are snow/ice covered all winter long, you'd want studded tires. Or if they are just covered if you are driving half and half, where the highways are clear, but the side roads are not, then a good set of winter tires will do. And then get a pair of snow chains, and put em in the trunk for emergencies. Done deal.

Snow tires.

Check into the legality of what you want to run too. Depending on where you live and/or the time of year they may not be legal.

Only run studed tires if there's snow and ice on the ground ALL the time. As soon as you run them on asphalt for any length of time you wear down/dull the studs making them useless.

^^^ W3rd studded tires are almost obsolete. The technology with the rubber compounds and tread designs makes tires that perform as good. For street use at least. Off road is different. No asphalt to tear up studs/spikes etc I've run studded tires and good non studded tires will grip better when there is little or no ice. Rubber sticks better than steel. Of course nothing beats a shower of sparks coming from a cloud of smoke. Not that I know anything about that.

Hmmm....

Meh, go with snows and pack some chains just in case. If your not familiar with them have the place selling them demonstrate installing them on your car.

Sometimes, if I could not avoid it, I would have to chain up the transport trucks I drove.

The way to go about this is to practice putting them on when conditions are good. Get it to the point where you are very comfortable with the procedure in good weather because it will make doing this in bad weather easier. Do not attempt to install them with your bare hands. Get two sets of thin waterproof insulated gloves.

Initially install them as tight as possible. Bungee cords of the appropriate length are good for taking up the slack. After rolling on them for a mile or two stop and recheck them... snug them up as necessary and you are good to go.
