recent trip

Post by nineball » Sun Dec 30, 2007 11:04 pm

just got home from a great road trip. decided on thursday to drive the 8 hours to new jersey to be at the pats v giants game to be a part of potential history. found some decently priced tix, they arrived overnight friday morning and early sat morning we set off. as you all know by now the pats went undefeated, and i was there for the final, and one of the best, game of the perfect year.

filled up just before we left, did about 85% of that leg on the highway doing 70-75mph with cruise on. averaged 35.6 mpg.

next leg was the rest of the way there on the highway and past the stadium to pick up a friend in ny, then to giants stadium. also included the monster traffic getting into and out of the parking lot, then back to the hotel in ny with a stop at hooters for some wings. averaged 31.7 mpg. (side note, we got lucky as hell and just drove up to the parking permit area and told the lady at the gate how we were picking up a ticket for the 3rd guy at the gate. she smiled, charged us $15 and let us in. saved us $10 over the other lot and about 30 mins more of walking - each way)

next leg was the first part of the way home, exclusively highway driving, 70-75mph with cruise. averaged 38.4 mpg for this portion.

haven't refilled yet, but just under 4 hours of 80% freeway driving 70-75 and 20% local and i have between 1/4 and 3/8 of a tank left.

while it isn't a luxury ride but rather my work car, i can't tell ya how happy that milage made me. my personal car gets about 24 on the highway using premium. doesn't hurt to add the milage before the end of the year either :) can't wait to take the next trip.

Go Pats!!

I live about 45 minutes south of Boston. I drive to Carlisle, PA every July for the all-Chrysler meet, which is about 6.5 hours. Last year, I got just under 36mpg and this past July (immediately after cleaning and re-oiling a VERY dirty K&N filter), I got 37.3mpg! This was nearly all cruising 75-85mph. I bet if I had cruise control, it would have been even better. I'm damn happy with that. Man I love my 3.55:1 final drive for long trips. We'll see what I pull in the Daytona with a 2.4 turbo and a 3.85:1 final driving to Carlisle next year.

For Christmas last year, I took my girlfriend to Manhattan and we stayed at a hotel about 10 minutes from Giants stadium. WAY cheaper and NYC is so easy to get around, even in a car. On that trip, same 35-36mpg the whole way. NYC traffic still netted me about 28mpg.

If I take it easy I can get rocking milage. Secondary highway, cold, snow covered roads, and making time instead of milage eat away at that. On my trip home I averaged about 30-31 usmpg. Either way with gasoline at $1.05 to $1.20/L it still cost me under $125 to do just over 900 miles in a day. Can barely fly for that much.
