So, I'm driving home from werk this evening and the car overheats....

no hot air from the heater... Water pump or thermostat??

Could be a leak too. No way to find out unless you check.

clogged heater core, preventing coolant from flowing? That's the only thing I can think of with a no-heat issue while overheated with no leaks and coolant in the overflow tank. Coolant enters the heater core from the block, which is why turning on the heat when you start overheating from a failed-closed thermostat helps cool things off a bit. Even if it were the water pump, you'd get hot air.

clogged heater core; possible but it was just replaced 5k miles ago (barb broke off) and coolant flushed and replaced - car has 41k miles on it.

If it was the waterpump, how would coolant flow through the heater core and give you heat?

Both parts are cheap so I'll just replace both - hopefully it won't be too big of a PITA to replace. :banghead: Anyone have the diagrams handy?

Try bleeding the air out by loosening a heater hose, pull it off just enough to let any air out, with the engine off/cool. Remove the filler cap on the t,stat housing, and add coolant.when it runs out by the heater hosereconnect and tighten. There may be air still trapped in the head, the only way to get it out if the t,stat doesn't have a bleed hole is to install one with the bleed hole, or drill a very small hole in it. if you drill too big of a hole it will take too lng to warm up, or not at all. Once you get as much air out as possible run it, and check for heat. as it gets warm check the top rad. hose for heat also. that way you know the coolant is flowing.

definitely the waterpump unfortunately. :( Im just glad it didn't take the timing belt with it...

cripes there's alotta crap to take off to even get to it! Had I known I would't replaced the mounts and installed a UDP at the same time. :banghead:

Psht! may as well replace the timing belt while you're there then your good for 105,000 miles from your current mileage. If it wasn't for removing the cam gear, I'd suggest replacing the cam seal too, as they're dirt cheap. Mine was leaking when I did my belt @112K. with 41K the timing belt tensioner should be OK, but then so should've your water pump.... Eh, there's always an exceptoin to the rule.

Yes, DEFINITELY replace the timing belt, and the Tensioner would be a very good idea as well.
Otherwise, you might end up doing the job again soon ......

replaced the pump, thermo, timing belt - would love to have replaced the motor mounts and installed a UDP at the same time.

Timing belt and tensioner looked absolutely perfect...shame to replce it really. Waterpump doesn't appear to have failed completely, but the seal around the bearing seems to have let the coolant slowly leak out. :( I was hoping to see the thing completely lunched for all the effort it took to replace with hand tools honestly....oh well.

I'm wondering if this was just a fluke - after all the car has been very well maintained with onyl 41k miles on it. Now the trans or clutch is making a clicking noise. <sigh>

wow this thread will make a guy paranoid  my car also has 41k on it and has been very well mantained,so far my brakes have been the biggest problem, ive replaced both drums because one of them had cracked somehow...i to am wondering how many people have these kinds of problems at such low miles, and will warranty cover those types of problems? i still have 38k on my warranty right now
